I have a 59 Chevy Truck axle that I am attempting to change the king pins in. I am having a bear of a time getting the old pins out. I have the axle loose (not on the truck) and had it in my 20 ton press and couldn't get it to budge. I applied some heat with my propane torch to the axle but that didnt help. The pin is stuck in the axle and the spindle moves freely. I do have the retainer bolt out of the axle. I have sprayed half a can of PB Blaster on it as well... Do I need to bust out the acetylene torch? Thanks Darryl ps. this is just the first side...
Used the search function...imagine that. I don't have an engraver but do you think a pnuematic hammer will do the same thing?
maybe all that other stuff just loosened it up! i do know a dynamic (bang) force is better than a static (press) force on stuck stuff like that. makes me glad the kingpins i did on my hudson were a lot easier than that. good luck
Yes re dynamic force, when removing stuck brake or propane line fittings I put a wrench on the fitting and tap tap tap on the wrench with a light hammer...never fails and works better than pushing (static force) on the wrench itself....
Yep. The air hammer did the trick. I was pretty impressed. I had a broken chisel for the hammer and used it. I put pressure on the king pin with the press and went all around the boss with the air hammer...few seconds later I heard a loud pop and the pin had moved. I repeated a couple more times and out it came. The other side was easier...I did it sans the press.
