Would like informatin on whats been available in a side draft intake for a 235 inline chevy.Did the aftermarket have side drafts? I've searched.Or are my only options blue flame corvette or modifying a stock manifold? Thanks for your input on my intake.

  2. Maybe Clifford Research if they are still in business. I used one of their sidedraft Weber carb intakes on my 153 Chevy II 4 cylinder engine but modified it a bunch to make it work in my application. Buy the carbs from a Weber supplier. Better pricing and support. My opinion is that there isn't anyway at Clifford smart enough to place rocks in a box....

Nicson actually marketed a triple side draft intake for Chevy sixes before the Corvette came along, but they're few and far between.

  5. Side draft.
The carbs on the early vette 235 were the same as the Corvair turbo carb. They are sort of a side draft version of a carter YF. I have seen 3 SUs used on chev six with great success. .
I went nuts on my six with 6 snowmobile sidedrafts but its a mopar six. The 235 lends itself very well to three SUs or similar. You might be able to find three of the corvair turbo carbs (Corvair Sp yder)on Ebay I would at east try .

I have a vette intake and 3 or 4 side drafts laying on the shelf. Keep thinking the right car will come along for them and my 261. Some side drafts have the throttle shafts opening opposite. I havn't checked close to see if they can be changed.

Clifford might have one -- they do forthe AMC six and Ford 300 six. If they don't, it won't be to hard to make on. Cut a 1/4" flange for head and carb base (most likely a Weber or Del'Orto) and weld some steel tubing between. Would be easier to make a three 1V setup that way for sure. I'd investigate the motorcycle/snowmobile idea too. The engines are small (only 250cc per cylinder on a 1000 cc bike, that's only 15 cubic inches each!), but they turn a lot more rpm than bigger engines so have to p*** a lot more air through the carbs. I've seen six 1000cc motorcycle carbs on a Ford 200 six, and dolmetsch mentioned the 235 Chrysler slant six. Should work well on a Chevy. Linkage is pretty easy -- cable! Get two sets of four then remove one from each set. The shafts link together side to side, so might have to make an extension to space the carbs further apart. Should be relatively simple though.

This motor was running motor cycle carberators.I got to watch this one run.Way cool setup. I'm building a 250 inline that I'm considering using mc carbs. The 235 I want more old school and planning to use carter yh's.I'd have to put linkerts' on to keep it period. All that br*** would look cool but could be a tuners nightmare.

I will be fabbing an intake for my Buick straight eight. I plan on using 4 datsun roadster SU carbs. The fab work will be fairly straight forward for something like this.

  13. Or you could build one. This one I made to add a Weber to my Iron Duke.

I have a set of matched carter yh carbs, they are right for this project. I'm probably going to modify the stock manifold.I've tried to search for side draft intake from the after market but no luck.Who's got chevy manifolds don't want to come off them. That home made intake was very well done and opens up possabilities I hadn't thought of. thanks for all the input

  16. A few years ago I made a new lid for a Wiend superstock manifold. I made it from wood and took it to a casting shop $150 later I had a cast top. I would do this again . The Caster told me though. next time make your models from Styrofoam and glue it together with carpenters glue. Then we just incase the styrofoam model in the molding sand and pour away.
I tired it with a small drop in manfold piece and it came out ok but I should have used denser stryofoam. Anyway. you could give it a shot. I was never sorry I tried even though I doubted myself every couple of minutes. In reality if you want to know the truth it seemed too easy. Here is the top we had made . Its just a thought and maybe you dont want to go that root but it can be done . And you get to make the way it shuild be http://www3.sympatico.ca/big-d/2X4.htm

If you're going to build an intake, you may want to start from scratch, rather than attempt to modify the stock intake. With three side drafts, the center carb would be going through the exhaust heat chamber on the stock manifold.

My idea was to use two carbs, one on either side with a block off plate on the stock hole. I could keep the split stock manifold with heat riser. The idea of modifying the stock manifold to go along with the split exhaust should't be that big of a problem, no more than modifying the stock exhaust. The two side drafts along with the motorcycle exhaust system would look right together.

icepick, dude, this thread is SIX YEARS OLD! He probably has got an intake on the car, sold the car, and gone on to another project by now.

Check the date! Threads get stale when they get past their "respond to by:_______" date.

    Later, *****6
