ive recently aquired a mode a 4 banger and need advice on rebuild and maybe a little on scarin another 20 hourses out of it
Ok heres what you gotta do. 1. do an intro 2. Look at the monthly banger meets of past. 3. check out the ford barn.
Winfield or Snyders head 6.0 compression, dont waste your time milling the stock head. Downdraught 97 carb, headers, lighten flywheel, Bill Stipe cam.... you're good to go. If you're pulling the engine right down, a full balance will help it survive, a counterweighted crank would be good too, depends how much $$$ you want to spend.
You can scare 100Hp out of a flat head if you do things right. alot of little things add up to HP in the end. The right head and cam combo, alittle porting, larger intakes, the right dist curve, and good carb with enought BTU's. I will be testing my Tudor engine in the next month or so and shooting for 115 HP did engine for a friend a few years ago and made 100HP.
Well thanks, I spent 6 years restoring it just could not seem to keep steady on it. the motor has been out for 3 years now so i really hope to have it do soon.
Do what rockabilly says and you will be pleasantly surprised. I did that a few years ago and with just the change to a Winfield 6:1 my time improved a full second on the Auburn hill climb. That same day I changed from a stock carb/mainfold to a Stromberg 81 and gained another full second. At the next climb I changed to a 97 and gained another 3/10's of a second.
are there any threads with plenty of pics of someone building a 4 ? and greatly appreciate the advice sofar
I've looked for books on rebuilding upgrading a banger from Tex Smith, Motorbooks, Vern Tardel, etc. But can't find anything. Obviously, those guys all have their place in EXCELLENT hot rod history and produced great guides to building hot rods out of Model A's... but am looking for a book for my brother's birthday on how to hop up a banger? Any advice?
You can make them go as fast as you want if your wallet allows for it. Just start throwing money at it and eventually it will go a little bit faster.
ive startet tearing down the engine and noticed a lack of oil filter an also i need some advice on how to get the valves out. and i was also woundering how much bigger valves i can put in it and is it possible to put in bronze valve seats and guides?
If it is an A block, you can buy a filter kit from any of the Model A stores, Bratton's, Snyder's etc. If it is a B block you will have to do it yourself but easily done while the engine is apart. The valves have mushroom stems, and the guides are split vertically into two halves. Remove the springs and keepers, raise the valve as much as possible and use a special tool, like a curved punch, to pound down the guides. These tools are also available as above. Piranio's in Texas sells a 1.7" valve, guide, and spring kit. Enlarge only the intakes. Hard seats are only needed in the exhaust. Bronze guides??? You'd probably have to make them yourself, but why bother. Other stores may sell big valve kits too???
its definitely a model a engine i was told its made november 1928 i was thinking about bronze valve seats and guides to make it alittle more hoopy with modern fuel sins here in norway we have a minimum of 95 octane gasoline pluss out fuel im told it pretty potent. what kinda of oil would yo guys reccomend with insert bearings and oil passages to the rod bearings and improved filter?
There's a book on building bangers by Bill Fisher (founder of HP Books) that pops up on Amazon from time to time. There are reprints out there.
