[IMG][/IMG]Another wiring problem here. Im converting to 12v and have searched and have come up with several diagrams and suggestions on how to wire my 249 L8. Not sure which way to do this so Im reaching out to the HAMB for some help. I made up this diagram of what Im having trouble with. If anyone can supply me with some direction on how to wire all this up it would be much appreciated. Just print it up and draw some lines or input some leads, whatever is easier. Thanks

  4. to convert to 12v you can use the 6v wiring....if it's in decent condition....swap to a 12v generator and regulator being sure they are compatible i.e. both from a 55 chevy (12v) and swap all of the six volt bulbs for 12 volt bulbs...you can use the same bulb sockets....change to a 12v resistor coil....put the battery cables on the correct terminals, neg is ground......you can use the 6v starter with no problems....and don't forget to change the ammeter wires around...instead of +to+ and - to -, make them +to- and - to+.....you will have to change the heater/defroster motor to a 12v unit (availabl at any NAPA auto store.....don't even think about turning on your 6v radio at all !!!...it will get toasted....they can be converted to 12v, but I wouldn't wast any cash on that....it's still only AM....buy a modern stereo/cd player...I hope this helps....oh I almost forgot to mention to change the horn relay to a 12v unit.....good luck and keep us posted on your progress....BTW,if you use an alternator, get a one wire job and hook up the 12v wire on the back of the alternator to the battery....and if your wiring isn't up to speed, then you must purchase an aftermarket wiring harness/fuse block of your choice....the prices vary from mild to wild, but ultimately they all get the job done......FYI take off the pulley from the 6v generator and simply swap it onto the alternator...that way you can use your wide belt to spin the waterpump and alternator from the crankpulley.

I did this off the top of my head, let's use it as a discussion starter for hot rod wiring.

I wired my '51 this way, with a few exceptions -
    1) I'm using a 1-wire alternator.
    2) My Bat+ terminal on that alternator goes to the main starter lug, not the battery.
    3) I've added a 60 amp breaker in between the alternator and the starter lug/battery.
    4) All of my circuits are fuse protected. (Ignition Coil, Electric Choke & Tach so far)

It seems my picture I uploaded has disappeared. I'll have to try later, but it was a pic of a 2 wire alt., push button start, battery, safety neutral switch, starter, ignition and distributor with internal resistor I was seaking help on connecting. The old wiring is already pulled out and I am trying to install an ez wiring harness but was having difficulty wiring these. Any help would be great.

  9. first of all, read the direction booklet...it will guide you step by step...I have used EZ wire harnesses many times...they do the same thing as Ron Francis and Painless wiring harnesses for a fraction of the money...and for us scrubbs, every penny spent matters a lot !!...all the wires should be labeled as to what they do....I laid my wire set alongside the vehicle to get an idea as to where everything is going to go...front lights, park lights....engine wires,alt,coil,etc....then all the dash wires are bundled seperately, inst.lights, signal indicator bulbs, ign. switch, fuel gauge,etc.....then the tail lights/signals...license plate lamp, gas gauge sender wire....you get the idea....this really is not difficult to do....read...read...read the directions...work slowly...take your time and work only on one circuit at a time...for example: wire the headlites to the headlite switch...then wire the rear lights and license plate lights...lights are ready to work....connect the dash lamps....now connect the ign switch to the coil....connect the alternator to the battery.( one wire style alternator).connect the battery to the ign switch...it's really very simple if you take your time.good luck and get going !!!
