Looking awesome Flop!!! I aways admire your and B***'s sheetmetal work!! The hardest thing for me is taking my time on not warping the metal when welding 18Ga or so sheetmetal up! but im getting better about be patient and working the metal to get a nice blended look!
    Whats the secret?
Line the panels up perfect... spot weld, grind a little, hammer and dolly Then repeat till your panels are slick?. Hint me in! Keep up the good work man!! And im jelous you got a A roadster and i dont!

thanks stews!! i dont know really i tig weld everything . tight gaps . easy on the grinding discs so you dont leave deep cuts in the metal . i only wled about 3/4 of an inch at a time and finish the panel as i go. thats a customers roadster well there are 2 . i have a 30 coupe that im gonna start soon

    thanks wandi!!

well got the quarter patched and the wheel well a quarter of the way in

i also wonder why they make the patches so horrible ? i mean come on almost a quarter inch short isnt from die wear!!

They like making things interesting for the hobbyist. ;)

Do you know what company your front subrail "feet" are from? The subrail patch panels from behind the cowl.. I wonder if they're the same as mine. I have a set here but I'm not sure if the work to make them match the original subrails are more or less of the patchwork needed to fix the ones I have on there now. Both seem to have about the same amount of work required to go either way.

Maybe I'll just take what I need from the subrail patches and put them on my original stuff.

Nice work, on your external sheet metal patching can you share your process, are you filing, shrink discing, then using a series of grits to metal finish?
Also what type of tig are you using?

    Thanks for posting.

    thanks big creep!!

tex***peed i think only one company is going to make those and for some reason i think its brookville .

cant give all the secrets away nuroadsir!! grind with a 6 inch 36 grit disc. finish in 80 by hand . i use miller machines.

    thanks s**** metal!

mr james i could give it a shot . but it would probably sit for a long time hahah .

    thanks metalsurgeon!!!

well got the wheel well and quarter done today .

it was a task at hand . the owner removed to much metal so i had to recreate the curved reveal out of weld where the patch meets the og metal

and heres a few holes of what was left after the patch was in

and this is it all finished up

one of the biggest PAINS in putting together a model a is this panel.

its a horrible fit from the get go . the "new bracing" is dreadful .

    notice the giant twist

the orig panel wasnt the best . pinholes everywhere . i transferred the orig bracing to the new skin . it fit alot better after that

You have to remember there is a bunch of variable with any replacement panel. Some are on the manufacturer of the panel. loose dies, sloppy R&D work etc. But you also have to realize if you take 5 panels from 5 different Model A's they will all be a little different. Quality control was not as tight then as it is today just by the technology level they were dealing with. I remember working in My Dad's MG resto shop and every single piece that was replaced, repaired or added had to be fit to the car we were building regardless of if it was OEM or aftermarket. Just my $.02. Nice work on the build too!
