No, there are specific MEL Edelbrock manifolds, I beleive the part number is LM6 for that one. They come up on ebay from time to time. Cheers Angelo
NO F.E. series is a different critter than M.E.L. family. M.E.L. speed parts are a challange to find. Good luck,Oldmics
The only thing that interchanges between the 2 motors is valve rockers and lifters. Everything else is different. For the record. MEL 3x2: FE 3x2:
There are more tiems than the rockers and lifters that will interchange with the FE engine, but it depends upon the year of the MEL engine.
I officially stole that one from the web. MEL's are an engine onto their own and like someone else said the speed parts are hard to find.
Maybe you can post a wanted ad on http://ford-mel-engine.com/index.php?sid=cc979d6ad370432c5c7c46b929044c55 They turn up here some times... Cheers Angelo
I was just curious to what interchanges. I have the fe intake and valve covers. Now just need a good running motor.
Edelbrock made a tri power manifold, it;s the L300 They are rare, but then again there's not LOTS of people looking for them, they seem to bring $300 or so, maybe a tad more when they show up. Watch the MEL site and thelincolnforum.net Oh, I figure you have a Mercury, but tri-power won't clear the hood of a 61+ Lincoln. There's a factory setup that exists, a complete Mercury Super Marauder setup is worth a few thousand, with the Lincoln air cleaner? Well that air cleaner alone is probably $5,000! Oh, while we're talking MELs..... 1) Replace oil pump and oil pump rod, use a billet FE one, ground, IIRC, .075 off the end of it to make it fit. 2) Replace timing gears, the OE ones have nylon covered teeth on em for quiet running, said nylon teeth fall off, clog oil pump pickup, terrible things happen. 3) Remove water pump, CAREFULLY remove the two small head thermostats, see em? Now take them and throw them out. 4) If you need pistons, get em from Wiseco, plan on spending about a grand but they are the only source I know of for correct ones, FLAT TOP PISTONS WILL KILL YOUR CR! These engines have the combustion chamber in the cylinder, like a Chevy W motor. You NEED dished pistons. The good? They have more torque than a locomotive and are incredibly tough.
Kiwi, your add is what started this! Haha. I thought I might be able to use my manifold on it bit I was wrong..I also heard there is an adapter?
56 Ford Custom, you can use an FE transmission adapter for the early MEL. Later ones (462ci) have their own bellhousing pattern.
The early '58-60 Mel uses a FE bell housing pattern. '61-'66 is different and the late 462 is different still. Only Ford! I'm aFord man through and through but I will never understand their fixation with changing bell housings.
I think you are going to have to make your own. I would start with these flanges. http://www.victoryheaderflanges.com/headerflanges_ford.html Good Luck.
Steve, one way to go is to get a set of MEL flanges and a set of BBC headers, cut the flange off of the headers and weld the MEL flange on. The port spacing is almost identical. That is if you can figure out a set of BBC headers that will fit in a 58 Merc!
