paint removal from trim

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57ford/60thunderbird, May 28, 2012.

  1. i need to remove some paint from the waterfall trim on my gf's 50 pontiac its old and cracking /peeling looks like **** i want to remove the paint without effecting the anodizing any ideas?

the paint is only in the grooves of the trim and the trim dosent appear to have been sanded or prepped in anyway before it was painted

Aircraft stripper is what I'd try. Is there really anodizing on it? I didn't know they used anodized aluminum trim in 1950

  3. i was just guessing about the anodizing i just dont want to ruin the trim in a way that cant be polished out

If it's pot metal I think stripper will harm the finish. Try acetone, or lacquer thinner.

I have a 51 pontiac, the hood trim on mine is stainless. Just normal paint stripper will get it off in no time.

    Wont hurt anything

In my job we have to remove paint from ornate metal door hinges found in victorian homes. Take a plastic one gallon milk jug, cut part of the top off leaving a handle, throw in a couple of handfuls of wood ash out of the stove, mix in about a half gallon warm water and put hinges in. Do not get this mixture on your skin or eyes, it is basically lye. It removes paint easily and the best part is the price!!

Paint stripper won't hurt chromed pot metal, but as mentioned the hood trim is stainless. It should take the paint off quickly and easily, just don't get it on the hood itself.

I would like to see how the wood ash works. What a money saver that would be!
