i have been doing a lot of searching and cant find the info i need. i am mocking up my late 50's FED and want to use a 68 Chevy 3 speed i kept from my C-10. its a heavy trans with long tail shaft. will it live for awhile behind two 283's? will only use 2nd 3rd and reverse, running 10 inch Hurst pie crust. can i shorten it without spending more than its worth? i want to use it because i have it and a NIB Hurst shifter that i modified so the stick is on the right side, it fits my budget. the long tail shaft is okay with my lay out, but dont know the reasons they are shortened other then getting engine further back. paul
Will it live behind 2-283s in a FED? Maybe... depends on clutch, how you drive it, weight, track bite, etc... lots of variables to answer accurately. It is made for a 1/2 ton truck... Cost to shorten? Depends on your capabilities. Can you do it yourself or are you paying a friend, or are you paying a machine shop? Reasons to shorten? As you point out, engine further back and you can eliminate the tail housing to save weight.
im going to run the same trans in my under construction fed i have a 550 hp small block powering it. my trans was from a dirt mod no tail shaftjust a flat aluminium plate and a seal.
