I have a 1961 parcel truck with a rear generator in it it is air cooled and @ 18 inches of exhaust is in it (the rest is in the discharge metal duct work) I already wrapped the area with header pipe wrap.. still is hot and I want to lower the temp in that area If I used regular gl*** (pink) insulation will it work if I wrap it and just use mechanics wire or something like that Thanks.....
The fibers used to make fibergl*** insulation have no trouble at exhaust temperature, but... In standard house or pipe insulation the fibers are held together with phenolic resins. About 450 deg F the resin slowly burns away leaving loose fibers. As you bounce down the road, the loose fibers eventually shake to the bottom of the enclosure or jacket, at which point the insulation value is gone. There are other insulations where the fibers are mechanically woven together (aka 'needled' felt) that are strong up to 1800 deg F plus. Piper106
Why not just use asbestos header wrap ?.. thats what it is made for. And yes the batts will burn if you leave the backing on and the spun gl*** by it self is gonna disintegrate and your gonna have hot insulation flying all over the place ... which could lead to a fire somewhere else.
