It is Memorial Day and I am trying to paint some ch***is parts using PPG DCC9300. I ran out of the DT thinner (which they no longer sell) and was wondering if I could use the regular Lacquer thinner you purchase at Lowes for a medium dry paint thinner. I know the rules but sometimes rules are made to be broken by Hot Rodders.

Regular thinner is $20 bucks a gallon and the good stuff is $60 bucks. I am not cheap but with the cost of paint at $100 a quart I need to save money someplace. On the other hand, I don't want to ruin all the work by using a regular thinner.

I would appreciate hearing from any painters that may have tried to cut corners on thinner.

Don't know if I would take the chance or not. Sometimes if you use real cheap stuff you gloss is not what it should be. Also longevity might not hold up. Also I would imagine cheap thinner would be a fast dry instead of meadium dry thinner. I use to spray PPG products all the time but I think I would pop for the real stuff. I dont like to do things over though. Just my .02. Rick

    Hey,

Paint solvents are alot alike like gasoline................sure, ya can buy the ARCO **** loaded with alcohol and who knows what, and yeah, you'll save $2-$4 bucks per tank full, but ya won't get the mileage or the performance! Cheap lacquer thinner is good for gun wash, but that's about it !

Never use reducers or thinners from any where but an automotive supply. They just aren't the same. The fact that you paid $100 per quart for paint is even more of a reason not to reduce it correctly.

Thanks for all of your advice. I did purchase the correct thinner for my paint and it came out really nice. I just have to get used to the new paint required in LA and the cost that goes with it. In this case, PPG is right, only use all of the recommended products if you want a nice finish.

laqure thinner can be too hot and cause dyeback **** other things. dcc is a single stage and will jell it up. just use the right reducer and it will come out right. ppg dcc is not cheap, but reducer it in comparison. dont cheap out. or else just buy cheap paint from the get go
