Ok, I am a semi-novice gearhead and I have recently picked up a 1958 Apache stepside. The previous owner swapped in a subframe from a 1979 chevy truck. I've since been told that I may run into width problems as well as it being a 5on5 bolt pattern. My question is this. Can I correct for the width issue by changing the spindle or will it truly be much of a problem? Spindles, Is it feasible to change the taper on a mid 70's camaro spindle to match the 79 ball joints? Feel free to tell me it's a bad or stupid idea. Thanks for any info. Tim
Before I became bothered with the width I would hang the front sheet metal on it and see what I had. *** for 5 on 5 what would you like it to be? There are 6 bolt hubs as well as 5 on 4.75 hubs that will go right on those spindles.
You may be able to drill a different bolt pattern on the disks. Just compare/pay attention to the center hole/spindle overall diameter.
That's it right there....and without pictures we can't really tell what you have. We can guess, but that won't help a lot. I don't see how changing the spindles is going to help. I know there are shorter tubular A arms available for some of the older car front ends, are they made for trucks? I don't think I woulda bought that truck, if I was you.
The lug pattern isn't that big a deal. I just happen to have some nice wheels I bought for a chevelle many years ago. Which 4.75 rotors are compatible? Hopefully it won't be as big a problem as I am being told. You are right about the pics, I will get some this weekend. Thanks for the replies guys. T
GM mid size will work, say monte carlo? You may have to change the wheel bearings but its no biggy. A little time at the parts counter with a caliper should get you where you want to be. Oh Squirrel, I ment to say that you should be able to come up with shorter A arms from the roundy round guys.
There ya go. See not a big deal at all was it, and you figured it out on your own so the next time you won't be as bothered as this time. You are doing fine my friend.
