Avantis are stinky fast buggers! Rookie is the part that sucks as you only get to do it once. Its great just to run up to the start in an empty rookie line and not have to wait and wait. I'm afraid I can't compare to 239. I'm one of those slo-pokes that they time with a sundial.

  2. Looks to be Don Waite's roadster.

  3. thanks jimmy its got simillar push bar and exhaust placement but hasnt got the narrow cowl

Surely there's some original hotrodder out there who's new to the HAMB with some more fantastic stories (like derlogi's). Jimmy B, you rule!

Just doesn't get any better than the Spurgin/Giovanine . . . unless it's the Chet Osgood!

Jimmy, is Giovanine . . . Ray Giovannoni of '36 Ford fame?

Jimmy can probably answer better than can I, but I think that Ray Giovannoni who had the '36 Ford was from Washington, DC...also think that he was the guy who started Ray Giovannioni Cams, which Garlits ran briefly...

  20. It is an honor and fitting on this Memorial Day to add to your thread Jimmy. I only have Thens no Nows, so add-on when you can. The collection was too mind boggling to try to identify each car by name, number, owner, and driver, I offer them as a HAMBer task. I do however have some info I will add if no one else does. The following collection of original negatives was recently found and digitized. The photos are, as far as I know, unpublished. I have at least been able to date them to May 1950 El Mirage. The last pic will show you why, May 1950. Alas I am not old enough to take credit for taking these, I can only take credit for realizing what they were before sending them to the trash. This will take awhile so sit back and enjoy. Looks like there is a page 2 so hang in there.

  22. Final pic is of the So Cal Speed Shop Special Streamliner painted white #2, the weekend it was rolled and before it got painted the primer black we are familiar with on the Oct. 1950 Hot Rod cover. Watermark is there because the photo and negative will be up for sale.

Thank God this thread is only five pages long!
I would have missed my appointments otherwise.
Spurgin/Giovanine 1925 Chev Roadster, a beautiful car, perhaps a bit over restored? But hey! It's at Pebble Beach!

  29. Thank you for sharing and thank you for saving them, they have never been published & they are of great clarity when most from that era have a certain haze or fuzziness.

Can I ask a question? You are selling & have sold negatives & prints on ebay, I myself have purchased a print of the Wha Hoppen Special from you (I am happy with it) but why should I or others here id the cars when it amounts to a commercial gain for you? I am not trying to bust your balls or chastise you for trying to make a buck, just wondering.

Oh by the way I have id the cars, I'm just not posting all the info yet.

    5 BR-Norm Lean 239"- Whistlers.
    80 CMR-Guy A. Hyde '40 Merc 275.8" Lancers.
    271 CR-Harbison-Snook '40 267" Gear Grinders.
    505 BMR Bill Boester '28 A4 207" Wheelers

  30. Ouch, I'm gonna take my ball and go home.. :) :D No ball bustin' taken Jimmy. All the El Mirage event negatives were planned to be sold off before posting here and trust me it took alot of will power to keep from doing it. If any commercial gains, it was certainly made by those who already had the knowledge of what was being offered. My apologies if I have offended. I have more era specific photos of shops, cars in progress and street cars but will find another thread to post since they have no bearing to this thread.

Jimmy please don't hold back on my account, these guys are just dying to hear about these cars.
