Hot Rods of the dry lakes era. Then & Now picture Thread.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jimmy B, Jan 10, 2008.

  1. Forwarding info about the photo attached. I have another pic of this coupe but not ready for publish yet.

    Jerry says,
"I bought two SCTA photos from you tonight and I was outbid on the side shot of the chopped coupe. That coupe was green and was originally built by Larry Monreal in San Bernardino. My next door neighbor and Larry were in the San Berdoo Roadster Club together. I have a lot of photos of the car that I borrowed and copied from Larry. It would be great if you could let the winning bidder know that was Larry's Coupe just incase he doesn't know."

I would have to think that most of the lake cars at Pebble were done to a level only dreamed of back in the day. Over restored, yes. But they look absolutely spectacular. Our GTO took first place in M2 there last year.

Great thread with some awesome history here. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Very interesting bit of info there. Larry also built a '34 Ford pickup that is now in Australia.

  4. I have been watching the auctions, I was short on cash, so didn't bid. I wasn't sure if you had sold them all that is why I asked. I will post the info shortly & please stick around and share those other pics you have, they do deserve their own thread.

I sure like this idea, as many of the "cars or styles of this decade or that" threads end up with new builds posted on them. When it comes to history, I like to see them the way they did them. Gary

  10. The team of Bartolacci-Pryor must of been distant relatives of both of us, Bartolacci is an Italian variant of Barter. :D

Well I guess I'll do an update, me and Bubbass got the Pierson 36 on the chassis and the engine mocked up in it.

I've already had a few texts tonight, so to clarify, no the car is not for sale. The "For sale" sign in this famous photo is what Pryor is referring to.

One of the best threads on the HAMB.

I love this. An A coupe amongst all the roadsters. Anyone know its history/owner?

    Chrisman Coupe?
    SoCal/Jim Travis Coupe?
    Tom Cobb Roadster?

I'm on a computer with no pics or I would post them.

Also have an early picture of the Flint roadster stashed away somewhere. Dark primer, no grille or windshield running at the lakes.

Just came across this thread again while researching some of my Doane Spencer pics. I believe this is from the 1947 112.35mph El Mirage run, everyone knows what this car looks like today.

Sorry about the big red McCoy. After my Summers Merc pics ended up all over the net from "Sharing" I'm marking my stuff.

Hey, great thread, where has this one been hiding? (Stupid question, I know, it's been here all along - just haven't seen it before).
    Looking forward to updates.
This is where hotrodding truly grew up from.

I not only missed this thread the first time but the 2nd time as well. Came across it this evening and have enjoyed it very much. Thanks to all of you men that have posted up these old time photos. It would have been a great time to be involved with all things automotive. It is still a pretty neat time to be involved.

Interesting that it appears he took the glass out of his windshield (but didn't remove the frame) for this meet. It makes perfectly good sense to reduce the frontal area, but it's just a little unexpected.

Here's one where the "Now" version looks older than the "Old" version. Built and raced at Bonneville and El Mirage by Paul Wright. It now lives at Condor Flat in Disney's California Adventure. I don't know when it was built. There may be an yet older version. I haven't found much info on it just in a biography on Photographer Paul Wright. http://www.hotrodroundup.com/paul_wright_bio.html#
