Vintage Race Car Pictures (2012 Indy 500)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chuck G., May 29, 2012.

  1. Thanks for posting. I saw several examples of Indy technology that trickled down to oval tracks and then to street cars.

Anybody know what drive train was in the Bardahl Special Kurtis Kraft #15? The exhaust definately says Not Offy. Those were beautiful cars.

Cool, thanks for posting. Back when you could still connect the dots from hot rods and lakes racers to Indy cars.

No roll bars in a lot of the cars

Cool cars, something about them when they were still hot rods, many built in backyard garages. Imagine... a time when a little guy could build (and afford!) to build a car for Indy and actually get to race it.
I see the restored #43 Granitelli car in the first set, somewhere I got this photo of it from the year it raced (1949 I think). A very young Andy Granitelli on the far right. White T shirt uniform!

  5. Thanks for the great pics of these beautiful machines. Sure are from a different planet, than those so called "open wheel" cars that raced last weekend.;)

then i try and watch the new cars run and i just can't get excited about it. these things were hand made by individuals, trying new things, all very different. the new stuff all looks the same with almost all the danger figured out. i can't even watch nascar. i lucky you could go to this.

That white Studebaker Indy car use to run the Midwest Council vintage class at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Rockton Il. The sound of that car racing by was worth the drive and 2 days of race staffing to hear. Lots of torque and low revving.

  9. A very skinny Andy Granatelli on the far right. Mr. 500. Read his book if you get a chance.

The #15 was Jimmy Davies' ride in '55 and despite the exhaust look is listed as a Kurtis-Kraft Offy.

Very nice. Thank you. Anyone have videos of these cars running on the track on Thursday or Saturday?

I have a couple I shot on my point & shoot I haven't loaded yet, as soon as I do I'll link 'em here.

BTW, the #59 Wostman Spl. pulled off the track during the Saturday session with smoke coming from under the hood, the safety crew was there as fast as if it was race day. Fortunately it was just an oil leak.

Also, pre-race Sunday some cars from the Speedway Museum made some laps, I'll get pics up shortly.

Just so there's no confusion, the YouTube vid isn't mine.....didn't have a bronze badge so my brief vids (in the album linked at Shutterfly) were shot through the fence in T1.

The Bardahl #15 has a 270 Offenhauser...I travel with Bill all the time...this car placed 3rd in 1955 with Jimmy Davies driving..and is the only car that has placed first in class twice at Pebble Beach...We are taking it and the Bowes #33 to the Millers at Milwaukee meet July 6 and 7. Hope to see you there...Joe

The exhaust is exactly as it was installed it in 1953 - is unusual but is "as ran" at Indy...the car was owned by Pat Clancy of Memphis..this is the real deal and NOT a repop!
