We have browsed the 40 Ford Pickup threads the Build threads there is so much useful information my head is swimming..I added the threads to my favs, so we can look quickly at them any time we need them. Thanks to all who have done tutorials.... I saw so many Awesome pictures of 40FD-PK's too. I can't wait for mine to be road worthy!!!! This is my very first vehicle that Hubs and I will do together. I was reading some of the 40 FD PK threads and I read that some of the original parts are near impossible to find..If you would like to add to the list of what parts are hard to find and what parts are easy to find..this would be so appreciated.!!!! Hard to 'find Parts are: Back Fenders Grille Parts I have found so far are what we needed was an original tailgate: radiator Here is a little tidbit of information on why there are not very many original tailgates for these trucks. The fellow we purchased this tailgate from said most of all the farmers that carried grain in the back of their PCKUP would cut a hole in the tailgate to dump the grain. That was new information to me has anyone else heard this information before? Parts that can still be found original Thanks
um there is no one that wants to add to my listsssss. Or is all the fun is searching for the impossible?
Well, you pretty much summed it up, rear fenders arent so hard to get, it is hard to get GOOD rear fenders (farmers backed up by feel). It also depends if your restoring or building a hotrod. Its absolutely true that they cut the gates for grain chutes, I've seen a ton and have one as well. There is alot available aftermarket so not too many scarecities. I'm restoring mine so you won't see it here but over at the Fordbarn.... http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70857
Hoods - not reproduced and the joint down the center holds water that eventually rots it out. Running boards take a lot of abuse too. Tailgates are reproduced new. good parts source: www.northerncl***ictrucks.com
We are fortunate, there are a lot of parts being reproduced for them, and there were a lot of them built, with used parts not all that uncommon..now for that guy restoring a '35 International or Dodge..hmm. Tailgates-reproduced Grilles-reproduced (painted or chrome) Rear fenders-reproduced (fibergl***-agreed not every ones thing) Running boards-reproduced (fibergl***-agreed not every ones thing) Too many other parts to mention Good luck on your project.
maggie i was going to offer you running boards then saw you had some. I found a box complete, new wood floors and an above average tail gate, I try to collect parts before i start the build, they seem cheaper than having to buy them in a rush
Yes, the window divider (outside piece) is re-popped - try Macs, Drake, Early Ford, Carpenter .... I believe it's the same as the car piece. If you have a good hood and a good pair of rear fenders, those are the major pieces that are hard to find and not being re-popped in steel. Wescott has a f-gl*** hood and f-gl*** rear fenders are around - BTW, watch the rear fenders for thickness in 'gl*** - they do vary. Nice doors are next I would say and they do make inner and outer lower door pieces to make good repairs - Northern Cl***ic Trucks comes to mind. Remember 42-47 doors will also work on a 40-41 cab. They are just slightly different and the differences will become obvious once they are side-by-side. Finally, when all else fails, buy a complete parts truck. By the time all is said and donw, that may be the cheaper (and easier) route. For individual parts there's a listing for Ford p-up parts by a guy on the HAMB and also parts are listed on the Fordbarn. Hamtown Al here on the HAMB/Fordbarn has parts (www.36fords.com), there's Gary out of Delaware that lists parts from time to time on both sites, and there is a 41 Ford p-up (nearly the same) social group here on the HAMB that might also give you a few parts leads. You also need to educate yourself on some of the subtle differences in certain parts from 38-47 on Ford p-ups so you know what you are looking at when you go to buy. If you PM me your email address, I'll send you a build I presently have going on for a 40 Ford p-up and some other pics I have .... Good luck on your build and post pics when you can ....
Thank you chubbie about the running boards offer it is appreciated Lucky you on finding a complete box, we are going to do the wood floors route and we found an original tailgate... My truck has lots of the original parts, which is a bonus..I will try to find original as much as I can. We did find a 46FD over the bank and it has lots of other parts that are missing on mine that we can use..Bonus!!! We were at a swap meet last weekend and I did buy a front window divider that was stainless for the outside for $5.00 and the other fellow that was there selling had the inside part that he gave to me for free.. We also bought a box of 40 stuff for $25.00 dollars, it had lots of things that we needed, cowl vent rubbers, stainless steel hood latches, and lots of other goodies. Our eldest son was with us and he bought three things for the truck, new front window rubber, things that go behind the fenders, name escapes me right now (DANG ALL THIS STUFF IS NEW TO ME) and some other parts for under the running boards. Thank you TomT, I will check out the sites that you mentioned and I will send you an e-mail, I look forward to seeing your build. Right now we are in the gathering state. I so want to get going on MY Truck but I know it takes time to do other things...Everyone has been so helpful on this forum. Thank You Maggie
No repop TRUCK front fenders being made yet..... And truck / p*** car front fenders are different, according to "The Duck"...... 4TTRUK
Ps; 40 - 41 pickup, as well as 40 p*** car frames are "identical". Truck frames are made of slightly heavier steel. Yes, you can interchange them... 4TTRUK
Beds are reproduced by Mack Products. Bed and rear fenders are same '38-'41 except no V8 emblem on '41 tailgate but it will fit. Speedway has the rear fenders in fibergl*** if you can't find decent steel ones. The windshield divider and all the garnish around the windshield is the same as '40 car. Instrument cluster is same as '40 Standard car.
Wow more great information I am writing this all down in my book so I can refer back to it when we are at swap meets..Thanks 38fordpickup!
I have found a lot of parts off the larger 1 ton trucks for the cabs thru 1946. Most of those were farm trucks and have great doors. Swap meets have been good for me on most of the other sheet metal.
Thanx everyone for all the great tips,I'm collecting parts also.A lot harder to get parts down here....Rod. Sent from my iPhone using TJJ
A friend recently told me of an original, near rust-free 40pu available less motor. If any are interested shoot me a pm and i'll get you the phone number.
Thanks mj40's for your tutorials on your build. Great details and great pictures..I love the yellow and white colors you chose...So your saying that lots of the larger 1 ton truck parts fit the 40. thats perfect.. I need to order a Bob Drakes Bible so I've been told buy a few others Thanks everyone!
Thanks! The 40 - 46 cabs are all the same. You just have to remove a cowl bracket used to mount the front fenders to the cab. Mine came off a 1 ton. Of course the front sheet metal will be different.
Thanks again mj40's, you have a wealth of information that is so helpful. I keep checking on your build its in my favs. We haven't started my 40PKUP yet, but have been gathering parts. We are doing pretty darn good. Does anyone ever have that feeling that their project was totally meant to be? But for me (us) its falling into place as the parts we are looking for seem to appear at the swap meets. for example Hubs wanted to put in a luxuries seat for me in my truck and damned if he didn't find exactly what he was looking for. it was from a 1929 plymouth car, the seat, is an all original naugahyde for $45.00 no rips or tears and it fits perfectly. : IT CAN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!!!!
Speedway has fibergl*** front , as well as fibergl*** rear fenders....Northern Cl***sic trucks has a super line up of body parts,...especially the usually rusted out cb lower corners. I went with a complete, ***embled bed for my '40... Nice item, worth the $$ and it pencils out to less that having one re built. Sounds like you have a super ride in the works...Keep us posted, pls... Happy Roddin' 4TTRUK
Thanks 40FordGuy, you also have great info..I know we are not going to find all original parts but thanks for all the info of where to purchase parts that will Be needed to buy NEW! We will be sure to start a post of when we start!!!!!!
