Im ready to split the bones on a 36 ford front end to fit my T bucket frame . the spring is in front of the axle. when I split the bones the spring perch will move in and will no longer be on the correct angle do I need to switch to a different type of bones or can I make these work . via cut and weld in correct angle .
Move a new shorter spring to over the axle or mount a new shorter spring between the bones. Or... you can heat and angle the spring mounts after you split the bones... But I've never liked spring in front setups!!
Ya, you really don't want to run that spring out in front on a "T" bucket application. Either get some '28-'34 style perches and shackles and spring, or move the whole deal back between the bones with a custom spring.
Can't just use a shorter spring because the perch angle is all wrong. You need to heat the ends of the bones and put them back out where they used to be to fit the original spring.
That '36 axle is the same 32-36(other than the "heavy axle"), so it would be easier and look better in my opinion to buy some perches from Speedway and use a 32-34 front spring that goes over the axle. You can still use the split bones, just cut off the spring hanger.
I think he means to run a suicide set up with the spring behind the axle (through the wish bones) instead of in front. He can also run a spring over axle, which would also require a shorter spring.
Suicide style it is. I think the spring over will pick it up to much I want to keep it low. http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac294/jleblanc31/SAM_1327.jpg
That "backwards" photo illustrates a 47-48 Ford axle with dogleg wishbones rather than a 36. The wishbones are much closer to the kingpins on this later axle which can cause turn radius problems with the tires rubbing the bones in the turns.
