So i've learned a ton of information on this board so I thought I would try to share a little project of mine with everyone. Hopefully it will help someone on a discreet audio system for their ride. My install was in my new 53 Chevy 210 2dr sedan. The easy option would have been to put speakers in the kick panels and rear deck like most of the old hot rodders have done for years. I wanted something a little more stealthy. I really don't listen to the radio so I decided on this: Kicker PX50.2 Ipod interface/amplifier. The amp is designed for powersports but works great for hot rods. Heres the controller, amplifier, and a dollar bill for reference of size: I started by removing the center dash bezel and cutting a plate to mount two 4" speakers. While I could have used a single 6x9 speaker probably, this way you at least have a left and right channel for stereo. After removing the bezel I was left with this: Heres a photo of the back of the bezel: With plate fitted to the back of the bezel: Speakers installed into the plate: With the dash reinstalled you cannot see the speakers or anything so it really worked out great. If my car had a console or something, I would have installed the remote controller there instead of where I put it, but I wanted something that wasn't on the middle of the dash or anything. This controller comes with a bezel that you could flush mount the remote into the dash, but I thought if later down the road the remote ****s out, id be left with a 2"x3" hole in my dash. I just drilled a hole to run the cord through the dash and removed the flush mount bezel from the remote, then used some 3M double sided tape to affix to the dash. I figure if the remote goes out, I'll mount a switch there or something. Heres a photo with the remote in place: The cool part about this unit is you can either control the ipod from the remote control, or from the ipod itself. For this reason I ran the ipod cord under the carpet and sat it in the seat. It can be hidden at car shows or whatever if you need. It also has an AUX in so you could run another type of MP3 player Although its only 2 - 4" speakers, it sounds pretty decent. I'd say good enough for most guys. At least gives you something to listen to while cruising down the highway. Let me know if anyone has any questions or anything. Pretty cool product if your looking for some tunes in your car and want to be discreet.
Cool! Thanks for posting. I was just thinking today of what to do for my 53 chevy and my 62 caddy for an Ipod. Where did you pick it up at?
No problem guys.. picked it up at a local car audio store. Looks like its available online as well. Good luck!
Great install and write up......I like newer electronics stealthy especially in older cl***ics like yours I will be doing something similar in my chevy. Thanks for the write up
