Cruise night where you actually can drive your car? Such an event is happening in down town Freeport Illinois (61032 zip) on Sat, Aug 6th from 7-10 pm. Freeport sections off the down town area we used to cruise back in the 70s. There is about a 10 block square cruise route, with two lanes going the same way, under the street lights. City folk line the streets with lawn chairs and watch the cars make the laps. Cops are somewhat tollerant, but ya got to be cool, a little tire chirping would probably slide, smoking em won't work and they will throw the book at you. Have seen open headers, but one wouldn't want to be reving it up a lot. There is a lighted parking lot that they charge a $3.00 parking fee for the night, you can come and go from the lot as you please. The lot opens at 4:00, if you want to park in it, I suggest you reserve your spot before 5-5:30, as the lot will fill. They allow so many parking spaces in the lot then they won't sell any more places. Last year they did have another reserved parking place. If you choose to park along the street, or in another lot, there is NO fee charged. There are food venders, and a 60s-70s band playing. Not a bad way to spend a Sat night. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a flier. Gene
keep me updated. BTW, you looking for something to do on a sat day? Sep 10th I'm throwing the 1st annual UPS united way car show in rockford. I don't mean to hijack a thread, but it's in the neighborhood. PM me if you get a flier.
bttt if any local hambers are interested in either event we could set something up. pm me if you guys are. I know you're out there.
Just thought I'd drag this back out of the "way back" files. The Freeport Il cruise night is happening this coming Sat night. The Validated lot opens at 4PM (will fill up by 5-5:30 $3 reserved spot for all night-only cost involved or you can opt for parking on the street instead of shelling out the $3. ) Added this year: Muffler rapping contest. $25 to the winner. Starts at 5:30 a block from the lot. Probably have to pay the parking fee, but don't know. Also added; BURN OUT CONTEST! $50 to the winner! Yea baby let the smoke roll-legally! Same place as the rapping contest, following the rapping contest. Freeports new public librairy will be open for show and tell, (bet they won't tell you how bad they screwed us over to built it though...) giving away free paperback books to first 100 kids. Cruisen begins at 7PM. They close off a 10 block loop and you make laps under the lights. City folk line the streets with lawn chairs and watch the festivities! There are food venders, a 60s-70s band (not most of you guys style, but its still there) and last year there were a few junk tents selling ****, all with in the cruise circut. Last year saw almost 300 cars in two reserved lots and a lot of cars making laps. Freeport has an awsome Ice Cream place just a couple of blocks from the lot- 51 flavors, $2 single dip, and a $3 double dip cone where the ice cream is piled higher on top of the cone then the cone is high, and your double dip can be two different flavors. They have the full ***ortment of ice cream stuff if a cone ain't your thing. Cops are a little leanient, but you'll want to do the tire smoking during the contest. There were a few cars last year making laps with open pipes. The cruise w****s up at 10 pm, when they roll up the streets. Plan to vacate the down town area at 10. Cops turn into *****s after 10. Freeport's zip is 61032. I suspect a map quest of 50 W. Douglas St will get you there. Gene
