I need some help. I am looking for a side view photo of the original 1903 oldsmobile pirate. (I beleive it was actually made between 1896 & 1897). I have found a few pictures Taken from the side, but they were photographed at a slight angle. I would like to find one that is a straight on side shot of the car. If I can find a picture like this, I can more easily reverse engineer the car on my computer. I want to build a full scale replica of the car. There is a replica of the car in the GM Heritage museum , but I am no convinced it is full scale. When I look at the replica, it doesn't look like it is the same size a the one in the original pictures. The replica looks smaller. The car at the museum has 30 inch diameter tires. Bu i beleive the tires that look more to scale would be 36 inch diameter. Making tha car over 12 foot long . This is a bit longe than the replica. If anyone knows where I can get a straight on side view photo of the original car, please let m know. Thanks, Bob
i never heard of it , so a quick google finds a youtube video from 2000 of a replica.would that be the same replica that is in the museum? interesting car , good luck with your search
You may find you get a better response if you do an introduction first. Sounds like an interesting project, and would make a diffrent hot rod.
There was an article in the last few years about that replica in the museum. Prob about the 100 year birthday of Olds. Maybe the Antique Auto Club of America mag. I think you are right about the tire size. They couldn't get wheels or tires that were correct. I think they were working off same pics. There were no blueprints of car. My thoughts might be wrong. That birthday was a few years ago,
I know the guy that had the replica built for GM, and drove it at Ormond Beach. I'm sure he would answer any questions, but not this week. He's got a pretty busy schedule this week. Give me a PM.
OK , some prelim info. The Olds Pirate was made by Ransom Olds and it was raced against the Winton bullet #1 on Ormond Beach in Florida (just down from daytona) in 1903. This was the 1st auto race ever on the beach. Ormond Beach was then given the ***le of "The Birthplace of Speed" & was used as a racetrack up thru the 40's The Pirate set the speed record of 54.37 mph. that day & it beat the Winton Bullet by only fractions of a second. This was when most cars were runing at about 30 mph max. It was named the Pirate because of its bare bones appearance. So thats a bit of info about the car. I have not approached the Oldsmobile club yet. That's a great idea. The car has 2 bullet style tanks on it. one was for gas & one was for water. the orig car had a 2 cylinder water cooled engine providing 7 hp and ran at about 600 rpm. It had a large flywheel and the car was similar to the style of the curved dash olds. There are only a few photos I know of of the original car. oldgascar
I have spoken to Steve Moskowitz & another man who made the replica for GM and there are no blueprints that were drawn up as they made the replica. They did a GREAT job on it but I want to make a full scale replica.
