Wheels clash? Should they stay or should they go?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Byron Crump, Jun 5, 2012.

  1. I like a more traditional look, so to me the car is way too busy, too much bling for my taste. I'm with Ebert. I think if you tone the car down, it will pop even more.

It is your car and ultimately you will decided what looks best. My only suggestion is to lose the whitewalls. I have never understood the appeal of them, never seen a car I thought they improved the looks of and I do not think they help this one. They make it look cartoonish. JMO.

I like the paint by the way. Have fun with it (them I guess!)

Maybe some break up on the purple..a nice stripe or two(yes I see the white stripe..its not cutting it)..and thats just my opinion..
as far as the wheels..maybe a contrasting color for the wheel and put the chrome cap back on..

other than that, nice looking, ive seen way more conflicting cars out there than yours.
maybe your just getting bored with it, so change it up a little bit..

dont do what your friends say..do what your heart and own mind say

  4. Wow!!!

This reminds of fashion experts telling a supermodel that she should get a nose job, bigger boobs, collagen...etc.

There's some purple cars on the HAMB that guys go ga-ga for...I can think of at least one Model A coupe with big n bigs instead of big n littles...guys also go ga-ga for that one.

I guess I'm just dissapointed that guys aren't giving this car the respect it deserves...

  5. All that 50's 60's bullshit is so fucking annoying too man. Are we gonna start arguing that a car looks too 57ish and the interior screams 61ish?

    Gimme a break.

If you like your car...good for you...leave it the way it is. If YOU think things need to change...YOU decide what you like and what you don't like.

I can tell you that after working on my own for the last 5 years, stressing out, going broke, over-analying and being way to picky...I envy and respect anybody who has seen their vision through to a finished product.

Don't forget everything that had to happen to make your car what it is today.

Car is way cool as is, and the paint sets it off real well as different !! I like it.
I would lose the whitewalls, go big and small, and see what you got...
    Good luck.
    Cheers......

Love the car as is, but threw together a quick photoshop of blackwalls with black steelies since there were a few recommending the switch. It is not to persuade one way or the udder.[IMG]

I like the Roadster a lot, but here are some random thoughts and opinions. You can take 'em or leave 'em.

Put 5.00/5.25-16 Firestone Whitewalls on the front and the Roadster will have more rake. I think that's one of the things that bugs you, and you probably don't even know it...the car needs more rake. If you don't have 7.50-16 tires in the back, you might go up to that size as well.

I would find and buy a good set of 16 x 4.5" ('46-48 or pick-up) Ford wheels, and have them painted the purple body color. Mount the whitewalls on these (with the new smaller front tire size), and run '48 Ford trim rings and whatever cap you want in the center. The current Merc caps will work, or you might want to find a set of "baldy" caps like the ones on Pat Ganahl's purple roadster. You need the 4.5" width to cover more of the drum in front.

Take the chrome wheels and mount a set of Firestone dirt track tires on them...5.00-16 front, 8.90-16 rear. Paint the "Firestone" letters white. Keep these around for when you want to change the look of the car...these tires ride pretty good too. Leave the caps off when running this combo, provided the wheels aren't unilug or multi-bolt pattern. If they are, sell them and start over. If your bolt pattern isn't 5x5.5", then you'll need to fix that when you mount the purple '48 Ford wheels. Or you'll need to have a set of wheels custom made with the narrow 4.5" width, and ONE bolt pattern.

Have the firewall pinstriped like the McMullen Roadster in white.

Change the steering wheel to something like the '50 Ford Crestliner wheel mentioned above. This is going to make it harder to get in the car, but you'll get used to it. I would also change the shifter handle/arm to something like a factory '59-60 Impala 4-speed shifter arm. You might change the dash knobs to the '49 Ford style knobs that So-Cal is making, but that's a judgement call.

Lastly, this is being even more nit-picky...but I'd lose the Speedway exhaust manifolds, and have a set of original Corvette rams horns smoothed out and plated or coated. The other option would be to have some neat period correct headers made, but the factory Corvette manifolds would be a much simpler change.

I would leave the coupe alone. Especially if you are going to keep radials on it. :)

  12. I think that about sums it up.

For me, all it would take is big and little black walls on some 5 spokes, Halibrands or ET III's and it's corrected.

The all chrome look of the wheels gives the roadster an AACA look. This conflicts with the rest of the car. Because of the engine, the roadster has a 60's look, so keep features that were popular for that time period. I like the purple, but say "goodbye" to the shift knob. Congrats on having such nice hot rods.

The wheels are a puddle of chrome, chrome, chrome and have no definition on the car. Simply painting the wheels a complementary or strikingly contrasting color to the purple would wake them from their sleep and give the car the little extra PUNCH it needs.

The coupe is perfect,on the roadster, lose the whitewalls and since you have chrome wheels do the hubcaps the same color as the car. The WWWs and the all chrome wheel look take away from a nice looking car.

Everything Bass said except if the wheels are one bolt pattern underneath I would lose the caps and rings and just run the chrome wheels.

    Looks good to me.

  20. Yea change the paint and maybe that freakish shift knob and leave the rest alone.

Even if you change the wheels and tires it will still be purple, nice on a Challenger but not so nice on the roadster.

Mount 2 tires with the white walls in and stand back and look at it. Seems like the quickest way to see if you like it our not. JC

Wow! Both cars are great. Everybody has their own opinions on stuff but overall I think you've done great. You've got a couple of cars there that most of us would give our left nut for. That said, I'd go with smaller tires on front, lose some of the fluff like the dash knobs, shift knob, etc and drive the hell out of it.

  23. Since you asked ....

The color is fine, BUT because it makes a bold statement on its own, it doesn't need all the other bright stuff. So here's my suggestions and if you don't like them I'll give you your money back.
First, LOSE the white walls. Smaller front tires for sure and maybe a bit bigger on the rear, give that puppy some rake.
Get rid of the fog lamp and I'd also go smaller on the headlights as well, they overpower the front end.
Paint the motor - either a darker purple or even black, let the chrome and polished stuff do the talking.
The exhaust in the rear is horrible, looks like an after thought. Either hide the tips completely or run them parallel to the rear frame rails along the gas tank sides. And I really don't care for the plaque on the spreader bar. I'd hide it undermneath a bit if you really want to run it - instead of it screaming Look At Me!
Not too sure about the white steering wheel but I guess it's OK. The top would be much better BLACK and the shift know? Really, are you 16?
All of this is simple stuff, but it's the details that make the difference.

  24. Black makes purple really gel.
    Black tires,black top for starters.
    Like Bass said,purple wheels.

  25. Or maybe something like my current projects wheel and tire combo since you mentioned big's n littles

I like the bling as much as the next guy, but those dash knobs have to go. Too much chrome on the wheels, but there are multiple ways to fix that...

    Keep the purple!
