It followed me half way home; I drove it the rest!

    Hi Fellas,

A funny thing happened as I left the York Nats East.

It DID follow me half way home (my pal Gene was driving it) and then I drove it the rest of the way while he took over driving the chopped 40 pkp.

This pkp was painted and pinstripped in 1957. The windshield shows that it was last inspected in 1958. The guy that has had it for the last 20 plus years drove it everywhere and used it to bring stuff to sell at York every year. Many of us over the years tried to buy the old truck but it was not for sale. Suddenly, Friday morning at York it was for sale. My pal George drug me to the truck as Bad Bob was opening the door for me to get in. Gene and Shadow chimed it that I MUST buy it as it was SUCH a deal!

I got out and bought it.

1953 Merc flathead w/Holley 390 carb; 3 spd Ford open drive trans, and 1965 Mustang rear end w/2.79 ratio. F100 front brakes that love to pull to the left when you brake! There are also a few issues with the old trans but it is being patient in trying to train Gene and me! I don't know the story behind the truck getting the Chevrolet pickup rear fenders but they have been on it for a very long time.

The builder in 1957 had two daughters that raced 1/4 midgets and this was the support truck. The girls ran numbers 45&46.

From what I could tell, the new pkp got the best mileage of the full PSRA fleet of 5 vehicles on the way home.
    Enjoy the pics.

    Lucky Al

Bump to share with the morning crowd.

  10. I think I could live with the Chevy fenders unless it was getting a complete redo/major changes.

Good lookin truck. I tend to leave mine a little rough around the edges, but maybe eventually a quickie paint job and restripe with someone who could match the original striping and signage. Only if I wanted it to be in its original glory.

It could happen. I'll see you at Olden Days.
I had breakfast with Bobby Built this morning and driving it everywhere.
Had a cash offer on the truck at breakfast but he didn't SHOW me the money!
I'm just going to drive and enjoy for now.
    Glad everyone likes it.

It was nice to have the seller call me today to make sure I got home safely with the truck and wanted to know if I was still glad to have the truck or was I looking for his hide!
Told him I was happy with the truck and it has performed EXACTLY as he told me it would... very refreshing experience in these times of too many people stretching the truth. I'll get some more parts that he feels goes with the truck if I will go get them.

I've got to return his plates anyway.

Good deal, better seller! He didn't want a cash down payment while I went to get the rest of the cash. Handshake was good enough for him but I insisted on leaving him some money while I went to the bank. I was gone about an hour.

He still wanted to sell so we closed the deal.

I'm honored to take over custody of the old well traveled truck. The seller had it 20 yrs and the guy before him had it 31 yrs. It was the guy before the 2nd guy that used the truck to support his daughers' midget racing. Don't know yet how long he had it.

Discovered yesterday that the windshield (both sides) and rear window are original to the truck. At least all three pieces of gl*** were manufactured in Nov of 1939. The more I look, the more I find.

    Hey Al...

Gotta tell you, I saw your pics the day you posted this thread. Looking at your beat up little truck there made me feel like home. I'm not sure why.

Love it. I'll be hunting for one as my next (wife's) project.

The Joe Barnett pickup built in the 50's has Chevy rear fenders also.

Thanks for sharing the pics of Joe Barnetts pkp. Google tells me the pkp was originally built by Jack Calori. HAMB is the best source of quick, interesting, and helpful information and history. Thanks. Al
