Well I hate to admit it..but my worst fears have come true as I tried to move out of my comfort zone and paint my 32 ch***is myself. I was doing great with the surfacer and the primer and the sanding, up till I shot the color this morning. I have all the specs sheet for each material but I didnt pay close enough attention and I mixed the color 1 to 1 as instructed but mixed it with color and hardner like I did the primer. I read on the sheet this morning that it was supposed to be dry in 45 minutes. Well here it is 3 hours later and it is still sticky/sticky. My hot rod fly-trap! So I go back and re-read the sheets and see that I was supposed to mix 1 t0 1 with color and reducer. I did a great job of laying the paint and everything is shiny to the max, but not drying. What do I do now? Will it ever dry? Can I shoot over it with color mixed correctly? Do I have to rinse it all with reducer and start over? Luckily I started with backing plates and wishbones, not the ch***is. Learning the hard way hurts!!!:p

  2. Leave the stick stuff while you paint your ch***is then worry about the rest. It is always good to have a few fly strips around the shop.

I sure wish i could help ya buddy, I am inclined to say that you need to wipe the paint off and give it a second try but maybe one of the pros will have a beter solution.

x3 - Wipe it off. Prep parts again as necessary.

FWIW. Whenever I'm spraying a product that I haven't used enough to engrain the mixing ratio into my brain, I wil actually write the mixture ratio, product names, and part numbers on a large sheet of paper. I tape it to the wall above where I am mixing the paint. I've found that writing it out is quicker than constantly refering to the P-sheet. It also helps me memorize the mix ratio. I reuse my written sheets as needed. Tape is a wonderful thing.

I do know that when fisheye eliminator is mistaken for reducer the interior of the truck is best wiped down immediately with lacquer thinner and every clean rag in sight.

    It's a scientific fact.

Wash it off and start over...no harm no foul, just a waste of hardner.

My daughter made cookies for us once and they tasted like ****...she added a cup of salt and a teas**** of sugar. Things happen, life's lessons.

  9. Laquer thinner and lots of rags (clean ones)
Then let it breath out for a day before you start again.
You will have to resand the whole thing to smooth the residue.
    Isn't learning fun!!!
Sorry there is no easy solution for you.

  10. It's better than shooting a complete and having it split open the next day cuz you ****ed up!...........happened to a friend once :D:D:D

And wear a good respirator and solvent proof gloves when you wash it down, or you'll start making these mistakes on a regular basis!

  11. Whoops,
The hardner has nothing to mix with.
I think wiping it off before its dry/sets and hard will be a whole lot easier than sanding all that **** off.

porkn******, post #3 above, hit it right on the ****on. Move on to other bits and pieces. Maybe by the time you finish all panels and parts, it will have dried. If not, well, others who suggested you wipe it all off have the right idea. Let us know which route you take and the end results. Good info for others. Best of luck.

AND, if it isn't dry in a few hours, it will likely be a problem down the road, even if it does finally "dry" to the touch. Enamels, unlike lacquer that drys through evaporation of the thinners, don't actually dry, but "cure". The hardener, or catalyst causes the molecules to cross link, making it into essentially a hard plastic. Same as fibergl*** resins & MEKP. I'm guessing it won't dry completely, so you'll end up having to wash it off, with rags & thinner, and if that's going to slow, go after it with Red Scotchbrite & thinner, that will take it off in a hurry, and still leave a nice substrate to paint on...ask me how I know...been there, done that!!...good luck!

I wouldn't use lac thinner to wash it off. Better use the reducer that you forgot to mix it with. You don't want to want to wash off the primer. Lac thinner will do that.

Well I washed all the parts off with lacquer thinner as most said to do. It did NOT cut the primer, I guess because it had hardner in it. I left all the backing plates with the sticky paint and it all did dry after three days. So now I am back to square one and ready to paint again with the right mixture. Thanks to everyone for the advice and support. C-dog
