Yesterday morning started off earlier then I normally like, but with the promise of cool old cars in a junkyard I was willing. Grabbed the camera, cooler and a toolbox and hopped in Roadstar's roadster for the trip across the state to hook up with a dozen or so other HAMB folks for a junkyard crawl. It was awesome to have finally met in person Ka-zoo, Rev616, Mulefarmer (and learn HOW he chose that screen name), and Michigander and of course seeing and hanging out with "old" HAMB buds is always a plus. A morning in a junkyard with friends, old and new, just can't be beat!

We hooked up with everyone at the exit off the highway and Ka-zoo led us to the recently reopened yard. Man, didn't take long for everyone to jump outta their cars and head for the woods. After placing some water, a few hand tools, and some gloves in a shoulder sack, we headed off, a bit behind the rest.

The first thing we spotted inside the gate was a '57 Ranchero with the REAR END STILL THERE. Whoa!!!! Back to the owner to see how much. Yeah, was worth buying and Rudy told him "sold". Once back inside the gate we started heading deeper into the woods. All the "good" stuff you kind had to search for cuz it wasn't sitting on the main path. Hoping and praying to avoid poison ivy on my sockless ankles we trudged deep into the underbrush and were greeted by stacks upon stacks of old tin.

Took lots of photos while opening trucks and searching for treasures. I found a cool looking Lincoln hubcap in perfect condition that will make a dandy serving dish for hot rod style hors d'oeuvres. Also found a headlite bezel that I plan on using for a picture frame on the wall and a duel headlite bezel that the guys say I could use as a bra! You had to have been there. Fortunately no one had a camera readily available at that point.:D

Here are a few of the photos I took

Which one should I build next??

Once back, we sat and chatted with the owner and showed him all our treasures. We sat around and drank a few of the beers that we brought him and he seemed very pleased to have made some new friends. Roadstar hit it off with him so well the owner offered to sell him all the ford 9 inch rear ends that he has hidden on the property;)

Said our "nice to have met you's" and "good-byes" to everyone then started heading the 150 miles back to the Metro Detroit area. We stopped briefly at my company's annual picnic (yes, I forgo-ed most of the picnic to go to a junkyard. Most of my coworkers just didn't understand) then headed back to my place for showers before heading back out in the roadster for dinner and alittle racing/hanging out on Woodward Ave.

Some folks, from the BilletProof weekend here in Detroit, will remember the Bennigan's on Woodward that has a cruz nite on Saturday. It was hopping with cool cars once again. We had dinner with my folks who had their '56 Olds out and my cousin Craig who just bought a brand new 400 HP GTO.

Before leaving I suggested that Rudy ride with my Dad and check out the handling of the Olds and had my Mom ride with me in the chase vehicle.... I mean roadster.

It didn't take long for the Olds and GTO to catch a light, well actually many lights for many miles. :D As quick and awesome as Dad's Olds is, the only time he actually took a win was when the GTO sat there and smoked the hides right in mine and mom's face as we sat in the roadster right behind him at the light. The action on Woodward last nite was like nothing I had ever seen with the exception of the week before the actual "Dream Cruz". There we classic cars of every description cruzn while others lined both sides of the Avenue along a 10 mile stretch. It was a sight to behold, gave ya goose bumps.

There were a few traditional styled hot rods and customs and I did get a few shots of those to share.

Rudy's roadster was a hit wherever we stopped or cruzed thru. One guy was so enamored with the little roadster that Rudy offered to take him for a ride. The guy has a Model A that he's had for years yet hasn't build a hot rod outta it yet. Hopefully the ride in Rudy's roadster put a fire under him to get motivated.

Made lots of new friends and did lots of cruzn. All in all a perfect Saturday in the Michigan!

If you have to explain, they won't understand it.

Great pics, but it makes me wonder why all that cool old stuff has to just sit there and rot away. I mean, sure, I sit around and rot all the time but cars, now they're worth saving...

Denise, Looks like some good parts left in that yard. You were worried about poison ivy. I take it this was a rare junk yard with no snakes? or did you feed them some of your famous chocolate chip cookies and they left you alone?

:D It's funny you should say that because we made comments yesterday on how we didn't even see one snake. Very strange indeed but it was probley a good thing because the rest of the guys probley didn't wanna hear Roadstar scream like a girl! :D

Cool pics. Looks like a good time. Any plans for another run to this yard in the future? Is the owner pretty good about letting people look around? Looks like a lot of good old stuff there. Thanks for sharing!

I'm with ray on this picture, you have to wonder about the story behind this old Ford.

On a related junkyard note, a fool I was with once in a old yard in the middle of summer reached down and picked up a snake and looked around and asked me "what kind of snake is this?"
to which I replyed as I was running across the hoods of the old tin.... "thats a f*ckin scary snake!"

I don't like snakes, I do like cookies....... looks like you had a great time.

Speaking of wagons at that yard, did anybody else notice the rambler wagons there, i counted about seven different ones on the piles on my visits there. never seen that many in person, especially in one place ...

That galaxie is something! I wonder if it's really an old racer or if some yahoo just painted that on the door? You could probably almost tell by looking at it. I'm sure the mill was long gone. Might have had a cool tach or something left in it... damn shame, all of them.

Well the amount of cars each weekend has steadily increased in it seems cuz the begining of June was no where near that many. This upcoming Saturday is the HUGE Telegraph cruz. In fact folks on Woodward were talking about it. From what I read in "Cruzn News" there are 53 clubs involved so far with a total of 5,000 cars already noted to attend.

and who is this Stickylifter dude?? Is he any relation to StinkyFinger?:D
