Ok... This has been in my mind for many years....maybe someone smarter than me can explain it:

A quart of oil costs about $4.00. A gallon of gas cost about $4.00. Gasoline is a "more refined product" than it's counterpart, motor oil.

Sooooo.... have we been getting ripped off by motor oil companies for the past 100 years or what?

I've wondered the same thing. Though motor oil is refined too...

  4. probably has something to do with the packaging, handling and distribution.... or they are just screwing us.

In HS, in 67 or 68 I worked at a gas station.

    Gas:

    28.9 reg
    31.9 High test

They only stocked Quaker State which had a decent rep back then.

Standard quality QS was 50 cents
the better QS one in the gold can was 60 or 65.

    Do the comparison math :)

  6. Being an oilfield mechanic and watching everything that goes on in the whole process and talking with engineers/customers for years now oil is actually just as refined as gasoline and then some with all the additives they add nowdays. Think about the extra cost of the additives..... you can drive a car for how long now vs 60+ years ago before changing the oil?

We just bought a couple of quarts of Valvoline the other day, $ 5.89 a quart ! This stuff is really getting expensive. On the plus side, regular gas is going down a little in recent weeks and is about $ 3.45 a gallon now here.

Oil is a strange product, what other one do you know where the price goes up and down like gas does ?

I'd say that has a whole lot more to do with today's engine's reduced emissions than it does with the quality of todays' oil.... the same crap that comes out of your tailpipe is the same crap which dirties your oil.:)

What burns my butt, is that auto parts stores will NOT give a discount when you buy a full case of oil. A few years ago you always got a 25/30% discount when you bought a case.
Now it's just the quart price no matter how many you buy.

    Still smoakin hot.......Jack

$10 a gallon here - but at least they're Imperial gallons.

AND our dollar is only worth 77 cents US

Didn't do the maths but I bet it still works out expensive.:(

I also love the new game the oil companies are playing..........selling us "GREEN" oil that is made 50% from used oil we gave back to them free !!! I don't care how they market it, no way am I putting used (even if rerefined to hell and back) oil in one of my motors! And, it COSTS more than brand new oil ! Now, is that marketing, or what ????

That would be about $2.00 for Regular and $3.00 for the oil in todays money so the motor oil is pretty much the same price as in 1968 but the gas on the other hand is twice as much. And we use more gas than we use oil. Bottom line, GREED!

Oil and gas are different things, just like cornbread and corn tortillas are different things. While they both come from "crude" (or, in my analog, corn) they are processed differently, and so are not very easy to compare directly.
