What the heck is it???

I got 2 of these at an auction a few years back, uncovered them in the garage while looking for yard sale items....what the heck are they??? They have some sort of old hard cosmoline or coating that flakes off, its chrome underneith the coating.....

I'd guess the lower part of a 1951-52 Pontiac grille.

The "hard cosmoline coating underneath"........could that be a protective coating for the Korean War era "chrome" ? If the part is stainless, then I am probably mistaken. But if it is not stainless, then I think it may have something to do with the material shortages experienced '51 thru '53. You can see further examples in the poor brightwork of some parts of some models of Mopar and GM cars of that period.
