I have a flathead V8 in my 51 thats getting pulled out. Would it be harder to put a Ford inline 6 in it? Im looking for a ton of power just want to drive it. I have a inline 6 that I can get dirt cheap. Just not sure??
the stock 223 ford 6 is one of the toughest longest lasting engines you can find ,damn near bullet proof . hell yes try it you wont be sorry!!!
Fords came with an optional flathead 6 that year. It was practically the same size and power as the V8 or at least, just a little smaller. In 52 they started making an OHV six. They also had a flathead V8 in 52 and 53. So yes, a Ford six should fit in place of the V8 without too much trouble especially if it was the 216 or 223 they made up to 1964 or so.
The six will bolt up to your existing tranny. You'll have to move the radiator to the front of its mount. Oh, and get ready to shift into 2nd going up hill too.
In my opinion the later ('65 up) 240 cube engines are superior to the earlier 215/223 engines in several respects. 7 main bearings, small block Ford V8 bellhousing bolt pattern permits a wide range of Ford transmission choices..etc. Ray
you could take the six bell housing...bore the hole .125" and then you can use a Ford toploader trans of your choice....I did this on my flathead v8 using a passenger car bell housing.....the bolt holes all line up on the toploaders...you can use the all synchro three speed or the four speed.
