Reading the other pre-oil thread got me thinking. I am finally getting ready to do the initial start up on my 53 Dodge truck, but am not sure of the best way to pre-oil the motor prior to the initial start. This is my first new Mopar motor and since these engines have a gear driven shaft for the oil pump, how do you pre oil it without taking out the distributor and the oil pump drive gear??? I did a search, but did not find anything that answered this question. Thanks in advance for all the advice.
Take the distributor and drive gear out Drop in a slotted hex drive shaft in onto the oil pump drive Hook it up to a drilling machine And let it do the work As the oil ressure builds up the loading will go on the drill however if its half decent all it will do is make it work If not you can burn the drill out!! done it many times and its good to see the oil squeezing out of the rockers once the oil pessure builds up - you know you have a good supply to all the engine before firing it - great bit of security!!
What 35 Desoto said, but turn over the engine slowly a revolution or two to allow oil to get to the top end. The dual oil galleries that feed the top end via the deck/heads will get oil by turning the engine over while priming. Rat
I've changed from pre oiling. When you pre oil it washes the best lubricants (***embly lube) away and they cant do there job.
I agree with spooledup. I've built a bunch of Mopars and never pre oil them. Thats what your ***embly fluids are for. Its really only seconds before everything lubes.
For years I've just pulled the spark plugs and spun it with the starter till I got oil pressure. This will also get fuel to the carb, and they usually fire right off. Works for me.
If You were still down the street I have the tool for that. OTHELLO ? What made You move that far a free house? Fed
