this is the best one i found so far for mig: http://youtu.be/dMLWKqdn920 thinking of buying their dvd's on mig and fabrication. http://www.themetalschool.com/ anyone have other recommendations?
Suggest you also visit www.weldingtipsandtricks.com . Jody Collier sends out videos by E-mail weekly and it is free, just sign up. He also has an archive of all past videos and lots of welding info.
I watched the first one, first time I've ever been able to see the MIG weld clearly. Does MIG burn BRIGHTER than other welds. Maybe the helmet I used needed a darker lense, still prefer Gas welding on bodywork, but TIG was great back in the old days when I was doing aluminum panels. Still look forward to the day I can get a chance to TIG steel. Bob
i've noticed quite a few welding project videos on you tube for building weld tables, welder carts, etc. have very little up front planning to them. they fab it as they go along and the finished project never seems to come out right. it also doesn't appear that they know how to control the dimensions. this is the first video that i have found that seems to focus on this aspect: http://www.themetalschool.com/product/preview_video/48
weldingtipsandtricks.com are the best in my opinion, another is kid named Lanse on weldingweb.com his video's are pretty good, he goes by the name chucke2009 on youtube... However you can watch 1000's video's but the two ways that your going to learn is one.. by getting out in the garage with your welder/s and actually welding, and two by having someone point you in the right direction.. either by going to a school or by having a welder freind/neighbor/relative etc help you. Welding is not something you are going to pick up quickly, at least most people aren't. Welding takes lots of practice and determination for all the different process', esp when you get into aluminum and S/S and other more exotic metals. P.s. the first video you posted,as far as I can tell he didn't clean that metal at all... and that is one of the first things done wrong by beginners.. (not saying he is a beginner but he should make that very clear in his video's)
Again, For someone that loved TIG welding aluminum and can gas weld steel, and stick weld heavy stuff, why is MIG welding totally different? Spitting out a roll of wire into a nonexisting puddle is a mystery to me. Bob
There very much is a puddle in MIG welding... The problem with MIG welding is that you can easily get cold lap(not enough heat), or porosity and still have a decent looking bead, which of course is not a strong weld.
i have nothing but respect for lance's arc welding and his honest approach. i think he made good choices with the hobart machines he went with.

The first technique in the OP is exactly how I weld and get a stacked dimes look. Many idiots try to claim I tack tack tack, but I never release the trigger, nor do I use the stitch function. I do however drag my puddle a little further than he does to get a more pronounced lap.
