My old man used to put two or three hole in the lip of the can where the top seal with an 8 penny nail then he had a lid he trimed to clear the holes. That working lid had one nail hole opposite the trimed area for a vent. Pouring out controled amounts through the 2 or 3 holes, then sealing the can between pours with nails down the holes. When the job was done or for over night the original can cover was put back on covering the nail holes and keeping the paint fresh. The nail holes also allowed any paint caught in the rim area to drain back in rather than down the outside of the can.

From what I remember the Restoration series is an enamel paint not oil based, I would have to go by Tractor Supply & verify that.
I used Rust Oleum industrial strength oil base paint from Lowes on my dually ch***is & so far I'm extremely happy. So that could be a subs***ute for this.

The question that I've not seen answered here is how did this stuff hold up on a ch***is?

i think the restoration is acrylic enamel. Rural king carries an oil base paint. it is majestik or something like that. I belive I read it is made from soy bean oil, but not positive!!!

  4. They will keep fine in the can, just rotate them once in a while so the pigment doesn't settle out. As long as the paint is sealed up and you keep it at the recommended temps, not too hot not too cold, it should keep just fine.

The Valspar Restoration paint has to be something other then an oil base, the drying time is 1/2 of what the drying time is for the Anti rust and the Farm & Equipment oil based paint. The can also says its "not formulated to be brushed on". The hardner is more then twice the price and the thinner is more expensive as well. (I was looking at it again tonight.)

Too bad the color selection is so limited.

Can acrylic enamel paint still be bought at auto parts houses? Around here only a few auto parts places even deal with paint anymore, and most of them push base coat, clear coat that requires special equipment to use safely.

As far as using the oil based paint for a ch***is, as long as your not concerned if it fades, I suspect it will hold up good (at least the old stuff did). The Anti Rust on the inside of my box was painted almost 8 years ago, other then where it was scratched off, (think s**** being drug against it) there is no signs of any rust. This truck plowed snow until it was wrecked last Oct. Gene

Valspar Resortoration might well be their old LIC brand of "polyurethane enamel" number LIC40. It used the same hardner as a single stage urethane topcoat. I have that brand on my daily for 5+ years now, never garaged, and is holding up great, never waxed and rarely washed. It was nice stuff to work with.

I learned years ago to dip out about the first qt from a fresh gallon ….. Save fast food cups and rattle can tops to use for it.

Just picked up a gallon of the regular low gloss black last week. Paint was $26.25 and the hardener was $11.25. It went on great but it does dry a little slow. Here's a picture of the finished product on my 48 F-1 frame.

I went down and picked up some Valspar paint along with some red oxide primer. Are you guys using any type of sealer between the primer and paint? What brand?

The Valspar implement paint I am familiar with is old school alkyd enamel. While that doesn't totally ****, a good acrylic enamel or polyurethane are MUCH better. Aside from cost, the biggest advantage of alkyd enamel is that it works fairly well without a primer coat.

I asked the local TS about a maroon for a stock trailer I was going to paint and they said I would have to buy a box, witch was 4 gallons.

I stopped in my local TSC this evening and they had some gallons cans of gloss black marked down to 10 bucks. Like Tim Johnson I want to use some on a FORD truck frame, 1956 F100 to be exact.

    Questions I have are
Tim how much paint did it take to do your frame?
Did anyone that used Valspar put a primer between the Valspar paint and the CLEAN bare metal?

I read the label on the can and it just talked about making sure the metal was clean and didnt mention primer. Thanks for any and all advi*****t

My local TSC now only sells a non name brand with limited color options made in Ohio according to the label. No Valspar stock at all from what I could see.
Pretty interesting that Tractor Supply no longer sells the paint to restore/maintain your tractor or implements.

Whenever I put the lid back on a can of paint II shoot a little CO2/Argon gas from my mig welder. It's inert and doesn't allow "skimming" to occur, at least so far.
