I guess i was lucky and found one without bullet holes, it did have much of the sub rail intact.
I just laid a piece of 1"strap on top of the frame rails and welded to the bottom part of the body shell where there wasn't any sub rail

  2. Jeem,
You best bet is to get it up in shape prior to any body mods.

If you plan on shortening it you should build a structure inside of the body to hold to the proper dimensions prior to whacking it. The same is also good advice for chopping it.

AllstarDerek really finished this one out purty....but I give you credit for 90% of "the look".
Don, that sure is a clean route to take, but my subrails are pretty damn good and it will be so minor of a channel, I do believe I'll be utilizing what I can.

Don's Hot Rods..that is a great idea using the marked plywood. I'm getting ready to build a model A coupe with pieces I have collected over the past two years. I was talking to Drew at Dropped Axle Productions tonight about building a "short" model A frame to use it for a pattern. I putting the coupe on 32 rails.

Jeem..didn't mean to intrude on your thread, just looking for ideas to square mine up also.

    Thanks,

    No sweat, I understand.

  8. Jimmy I did a 1 " channel once that instead of messing with the subframe I cut an inch off the top of the frame rail under the body only. Much easier than altering the subframe.

It doesn't matter what body a guys is working on be it a Model A sedan, 48 Chevy pickup or Shoebox Ford, it's best to get everything squared and straight along with being solidly fastened down to something before making the first cut. If the doors don't fit as close to perfect before you do the cut they damned well won't fit any better after you do the cut. That I can say from experience on the first chop I tried on a pickup cab.

Don probably caused a run on Lowes or Home Depot for plywood and 2x4's this afternoon. That's probably one of the simplest and most useful things anyone has posted on the Hamb that will save a lot of guys a lot of grief.
I'll be using that one on my boat tail body that I am trying to ***emble right now.

because when you chop a tudor sedan the porportions get all outta whack unless you shorten it about 4 inches IMHO...go back to page one of this thread and look at the shortened, chopped black highboy sedan....looks right-on I think.
    Just my opinion..

jeem your garage is getting a little crowded. i think to get a little room you need to store those ASC rails in you side yard, you know right near that short gate you have ;) you probably have time to do this before your coming vacation. i'm SURE  nothing will happen to them there

  19. You saw it in TRJ. That car started out ORANGE with red wires back in the 80s. It was featured in SRM and looked much better than in the later blue trim. It now resides in Japan. I look at that feature every few months.

Wait a second....are you talking about Jim Kitchin's MERCURY(yeah, right) saloon sedan? Orange with red wires? I need PICS!!

...and Jim...my garage is not that crowded. Thanks for the concern though!

  21. I have a sedan also for "some day". But I want to build it full fendered like the Chrisman sedan.. I reall don't see any bad proportions after it's chopped...

Like was said before, trim the inner lip off the subrails and move the cross-bracing to the top of the sub-frame vs. the bottom. You will get it sitting about 1 1/4" over the frame. You will also have to adjust the "feet" at the bottom of the cowl. My 31' was on a 32' frame and if I had kept it that was in it's future.
You will have to do some adjusting at the rear also because the entire back half of the A's subframe will not work with a 32' frame without major surgery!

  23. No not Jims, who I met on the salt last year BTW.

    Another one.

I absolutely second that Lynn. I'm not a huge fan of the shortened , chopped "A" sedan.

  26. You really think it was nicer than the original? I will post up some shots tonight.

Ya, I really do. I just couldn't get the car in orange and red wires for some reason. It seemed to come more "alive" to me in that slightly pearlesant blue with the chrome...

NOW I know which blue sedan y'all are talking about. Not sure I've seen the red and orange, sounds like it has potential....could also be horrible. Chip, I love fendered A sedans. I REALLY diggem. BUT! The A sedan I'll build will be bad***. That's right....BAD ***
