Hambers, I'm looking for some clean blackwall tires for my '63 Chevy P/U. Cokers unfortunately are wayyyy beyond my budget. Looking for something with a clean sidewall unlike most new tires and affordable, under $130 a piece. Only tire I've found even close to my liking is the Ma**is LT235/75R 15 (model 751). It has a fairly clean sidewall and piecrust style top. Only thing I don't like is the raised lettering...Anyways, here's the truck, it actually has a worn out ma**is on the back, check it out. Any tire input would be greatly appreciated.

You can slice the raised lettering off with single edge razor blades and a lot of patience, then buff out sidewall..

Look online for prices at Tire Rack. Quite often even with the shipping you save a lot. Shop around independent tire shops locally, just to get an idea and see what they'll do you for a cash deal.

My rear tires have had white letters and now, white sidewalls. I mounted the white on the inside and sprayed that side with Dupli-color bumper paint (black). Lasted for years and never wore off. One spray can does two tires that size. Use a few medium coats. Letting it dry between coats.

Rears are BFG-radial TA P235/60rx15 on TTD 7x15 wheels.
Mounted with white raised lettering to the inside.
    235/60-15 x7 * = 663mm or 26.1 in
    $115 each @ Summit

Fronts are Coker pro-trac 5.60x15's mounted on TTD 4.5x15 wheels
    560-15 pro-trac= 25.88 in
    $158 each @Coker

Bought them before becoming an Alliance member - could have saved some money, but hindsight is 20/20.

I am going to buy a set of blackwalls for my winter tires for my '51 Ford and I will be getting them from Sams. Last week they were $83 each and were BFG Touring 205/75 R15's. But I am going to bite the bullet and get the Coker WWW for my spring/summer/fall riding time.

Go to your nearest car dealer and ask where they buy tires for there used cars. We have a vendor that sells us dirt cheap tires, but even the name brand stuff is cheaper. Maybe you could buy a set over the counter. Maybe I'm out of touch with pricing, but it seems like everyone wants a fortune to mount and balance tires these days, since I mount and balance all my own. Good luck, no shame in a nice, matching set of black walls!

The cleanest sidewalls I've found to date are BFG Radial TA's. Flip the white letters inside and you've got a nice slick blackwall.

The BF Goodrich T/A touring radials are good tires. I had them on an OT Buick and they rode great in the rain too. Another good tire is the Hankook 80K radial, forget what its called.

All of my OT cars wore blackwalls for years. Some of the newer radials come in BW only. Mounting and balancing runs like $20-25 per tire and in NY they have that $2.50 disposal fee, whether or not they keep the old tires.

The $75 bargain tire can easily wind up being a $115 tire after the mounting and taxes are added in.
