318 Polysphere Dodge to Chevy Manual Transmission

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Scotch Buzzard King, Jun 13, 2012.

  1. Is there a way to put a Chevy manual transmission behind a 318 Dodge Polysphere?

  2. I've got a running 318 Poly and a good Chevy transmission. I've even got the flywheel and clutch for the Poly.

    ^^^^^^^^^^!!

  4. I'm cheap. Sue me. Is there a way or not?

  5. You could probably adapt it, but I would be inclined to sell of the chev trans and find an A-833 and a small block bell housing and have it just bolt together.

  6. That said, it depends on the year of the poly - there were different crank flange to block dimensions on earlier ones - do a search on here it has been do***ented.

  7. No selling. Simple question. Yes or no.

shouldn't be tough; I think TCI sells whole adapter kits so look them up for bellhousing adapter only parts. As for the clutch height matching or starter pocket clearance, I don't know.

  9. I found this bellhousing for a 318-340-360 to a Muncie transmission. Do you think this would work with the stock Mopar flywheel?

Lighten up and do some research. These questions seldom have a simple yes or no answer.

Usually it's a maybe if you want to put out the effort and make something yourself, or a maybe if you can find the right parts.

  11. You're right.

  12. I think this bellhousing would bridge the gap. It's got a hefty price tag, but my choices are new SBC heads and a total rebuild of that 350 or using the 318 poly that I have that runs and paying the price for this bellhousing. Since its going into my old Dodge anyway, I don't have a problem of running at least half-Dodge. :D

The 6 bolt crank flange 318s all have the same pattern up through modern times, if yours is an 8 bolt flange you'd need the 392 Hemi to Chevy adaptor.

    because it's a CHEVY

  15. Won't the bellhousing adapter cost a bit more than a A-833???

  16. :D

$550 for the bellhousing. Its an actual bellhousing with no adapters.

  17. The bellhousing will work. Just put a Chevy disc under the Mopar pressure plate. Make sure the pilot shaft is the correct length. Also, if the 318 was originally built for an automatic, the crank may not be drilled deep enough for pilot shaft clearance, or machined to the right diameter for the pilot bushing. I've run into this on several 383s from the 60s. I've gone the other way with Poly 318s, but never auto to manual.

  18. I lucked out. My 318 Poly is from a 3-on-the-tree Sweptline.

Or contact 73RR and get one of his adaptors, buy an AAx15 dakota 5 speed box and keep it all simple. Sure you can try to do the chev g/bo thing but I think you will find making an AX15 fit would be easier and cheaper. If you have the flywheel for your engine thats part of the battle won - the rest is straightforward

What he said. The Quicktime bell wont do it by itself if you have a pre 62 engine. You will still need an adapter.

  22. It's a '63. The Quicktime bell will work just fine.

  23. the mopar trans has a longer input shaft than the chevy trans so the answer is no it won't fit...the 318 340 360 bell housing is a different bolt pattern than the poly engine. a couple of the holes will line up but not all of them....save your money ...instead of buying the bell housing, put your $$$ toward an 833 transmission that will simply bolt right in.

  24. "A" motor poly has the same bell housing bolt pattern as an "LA" or Magnum as far as I remember.

  25. You're right. It does. My 318 "A" has a later "LA" bellhousing with a built on hydraulic slave cylinder on it already, and it works just fine.

You think that a company that makes a bellhousing to put a Chevy Muncie on a 318 Dodge wouldn't have the shaft length worked out in their design? You guys who want me to give into your pressure to buy a 833 need to give it up already because its not happening.

...some of the folks are ***uming that you are a noob with this kind of swap. It generally isn't cheap and gains the swapper very little. This is a good example of 'just because you can does not mean you should' sorta deal. Now, if you are installing the 318 in a 57 Corvette then the swap would make perfect sense...

The folks are actually trying to help you.
You might want to check the at***ude.

Where you have a '63 the bell or the Chr 318 to Chevy Wilcap adaptor would work, just witch is cheaper. Considering what either costs they're just saying it might be cheaper still to get the Mopar ****** from a junkyard & mod your driveshaft for the Mopar ******. just a matter of how you want to spend the $s.

  29. So let me get this straight; an early Hemi to S10 T5 isn't considered a dumb *** newbie swap, but any other Dodge to Chevy swap is?! I don't get this negative bias towards Dodge swaps that are unconventional. I understand the people here who are helping me. They've actually provided some pretty good information. You on the other hand can check out this at***ude and go fly a kite.
