got a 1950 chevy, i am having trouble shifting on the column someone told me they sell a kit to make it a floor shift....has anybody done this and where can i get the kit....thanks
I don't know if anyone still makes them...try Evilbay or a large swap meet...they used to be made by Spark-O-Matic and Hurst and maybe Almquist...a long time ago...not sure if they are still made for three speed transmissions anymore...Try JC Whitney,Speedway,Moon Equipment....If you take the time to eliminate all the slopiness in your linkage and adjust it right, its actually a good setup.
You might even try your local parts house.. A lot of them still sell a universal 3 spd shifter for cars and trucks(more heavy duty).. You can probably adapt one to work in your Chevy.. Good luck.....
yes it is a problem but it doesn't take long to learn which lever to pry up on under the hood to get back on the road. any of the big online racing catalog stores should fix you up. I'm building my own out of old parts for a chevy three speed overdrive on another thread but I don't think it would help you
yeah i been "practicing" and i keep on messing up so I even removed the cover from the inside so I untangle the gears,,,,,,
Not the answer to your question, but this used to be a fairly common problem on old worn out cars, and its made worse when you try to go straight from low to second like a "Z". Try shifting it more like an "H", even maybe go a little past the crossover on the way up, then over and then up to second. Maybe this will help get you by until you find a floor shifter. Oh, and BTW, worn out floor shifters do the same thing.Good Luck
National chevy ***ociation sells one. 170.00 bucks. Part number 7105-1 Looks pretty un-complicated to install also.
I helped a Chevy guy change his '53 p***enger car column shift over to a Chevy pickup 3-speed floor shift trans. I think the donor pickup was a '39, we had a graft to do on the rear of the case for the torque tube bell. Cast iron ****** case was power hacksawed, ground, fitted, and the '53 tail and '39 main case brazed back together. It worked, and was 'real cool' with the 'real' cane stick in a late model car. (did it in Metal Shop, Santa Clara High...1956)
Hurst sells conversion kits for 3 speed Chevy trans. You just have to know which one you have and make sure what you get clears your seat. This is what was available for my 3 speed OD trans in my 1957 Chevy truck: HUU-3667271 shifter and HUU-3670010 installation kit. It is listed for a Chevelle but it will work with your transmission and the stick has a big bend for seat clearance. HUU-5010002 is your second option. It is the Indy SSA shifter for the 3 speed and has a slightly bent stick for the seat. Ends up neither either cleared the seat (I installed buckets). But the OD linkage installs farther back, and you may not have the problem. don
What a perfect explanation Rex. In the mid 70's I had a 65 Econoline van, in back usually my Iron Head Harley drag bike, and 2 CZ motocross Bikes. The only way to get from first to second was to go past neutral just kissing reverse and quickly back into neutral and over and up into second. Worked like a charm. HURST who?, TR
yep thats pretty much my problem, from first to second......i either dont get completely out of first or go to high that i grind reverse.........dont know why but while i was untangling the gears i try with my left hand crossing all the way i did it perfect.....
Two thumbs up for National Chevy ***ociation, I have used them and have had good experience with them.
