So we're thinking of moving to the Crystal Lake area in northern Ill. to be near family.Wondering if there is much going on there with regard to the traditional Hot Rod culture ? Bob

Seems like there are plenty of traditional good shows around Chicago, or within 3-4 hours of Chicago in Iowa, Michigan, Indianapolis. Road Block, Jalopy Fest around Chicago haven't been mentioned yet, Torquefest isn't far. There's a Saturday (or maybe Sunday) breakfast in the south suburbs, which would be an hour drive from Crystal Lake. Haven't been to it because my car isn't on the road yet.

    Here's a Chicago related thread:

  4. Bob,

It's good around here. I live (and my shop Fox Valley Hot Rods) is about 10 minutes from Crystal Lake. Please feel free to email me and we can discuss further. I'd be glad to welcome you to the area!!!!

Other things to consider is the state is bankrupt and the Chicago politicos are raising taxes on everything. Busineses are leaving for Indiana and the cost of living will go up when the Bush tax cuts expire Dec. 31.

If you have to move it would make more sense to try Wisconsin.

    jailhouse bob....
I can tell you that the scene in WI, and Chicago land area is really good.
I have done the Syracuse show up there a few times as well as the Rumblers show and the shows around here are actually better.
Rumblers show is one of the best.....
Jalopy Showdown in PA is one of THE best as well.....
but I think you will find the community is pretty cool here and like anything - if you make an effort to get out and make new friends.....
I am sure you will find no lack of things to do in a short amount of time.

The other one that was not mentioned was the Relix Riot.
I am not sure why only a handful of Chicago people go to that show - it is not that far away in MI and it is a REALLY good show on some killer museum grounds.

Hope to meet ya and to all those that are putting down IL....
the same could easily be said for the state of NY where he is coming from.

Thanks to all those that replied.I currently live (and have all my life) in New York.It is also broke, has been raising taxes and chasing business to other states for as long as i can remember and seems to make every effort to make life difficult in every way possible for the middle cl***.I'm not leaving for any of those reasons and don't really expect to find "greener pastures" with regard to any of those issues (we live in difficult economic and political times).I simply want to move near my daughter and grandchildren and still enjoy my lifelong interest in old cars. Thanks again,Bob

Depends where in NY you're coming from I suppose... But Crystal Lake isn't exactly an inner ring suburb of Chicago. That being said Chicago is a fantastic town and I love it.

It's too damn cold for me, I'm moving to Denver.
