This is ********. The county is just trying to extort money from these folks. For you guys that aren't familiar with speedworld, this is where they hold the nostagia drags here in Phoenix. http://www.azcentral.com/community/...eedworld-must-close-maricopa-county-says.html
Saw the bad news on Channel 3 this morning,I sent Spike a pm hopefully more to the story, remember you folks in AZ we have an election coming up if the *** clowns are running for re-election we need to vote them out.Is this the fault of the same Board of Supervisors that is fleecing Maricopa County taxpayers for their ongoing feud with Sheriff Joe for their "pain and suffering" and becoming millionaires? I feel sorry for the folks that will lose their jobs over this mess.
I spoke with the track manager this morning and was informed that the Dragstrip will remain open. Please see attached Press Release from Speedworld.
I call "********"!!! Speedworld brings in revenue for the local area. What a crock! Hopefully they'll be able to work it out with the county.
Maybe someone else has their eyes on the property, and is using their city hall muscle to force the owner out?
Hmmm. Now if that Dan Matthews the owner, would go back to the county board, and let them know he was grandfathered in with that land. That there are two things he enjoys in this world, racing and raising hogs. Which do they want him to do with HIS land? HellRaiser
I always loved speedworld and have spent a ton of time there. I have been hearing rumblings of permit /building code issues both from track employees and frequent racers for at least 10 years. I am surprised it took this long for these issues to come to a head. This has a lot more to it than trying to squeeze money out of the track.
The real ****s of this is, it sounds like Maricopa county is setting Speedworld to be taken by "Eminent Domain". Much like Tempe did with land they took down by the river bed. HellRaiser
I read that it is Az trust land that he leases, but if some other goverment agency wants it they will throw him out, seen it done by AZ
The artical says the county is worried the improvments are not up to code so they are worried about "safety". When they close the tracks and they start racing on the streets, that'll be safe. We're pretty sure our only dragstrip is doomed soon, too close to a new home development the city is behind.
Sounds like someone wants to develope the land and is trying to close it down. Follow the money...After I seen all the home developments being built past Sun City...it was a matter of time. I spent alot of time at that track when I lived in AZ. It would be a major lost to the racing community if that happened. I liked it because it was much smaller than Firebird and alot closer that Tucson...Save the track!!!!
Please sign the pe***ion and leave a positive comment Thanks http://signon.org/sign/keep-speedworld-raceway?source=s.em.mt&r_by=4712535
that signature pe***ion has also been making the rounds on facebook. if you like drag racing, have been to a drag race, have heard of drag racing or have ever wanted to go to a drag race i encourage you to sign it. smaller tracks like speedworld make drag racing accessible to everyone.
I think a lot of you do not understand the issue here. It does not seem to have anything to do with politics, bs, etc. There are zoning and permit requirements almost everywhere. People seem to like lots of restrictions on their life, HOAs are a great example. Anyway, apparantely Speedworld violated or byp***ed some required permits and that is the issue. I have not seen anything written that these issues cannot be remedied. Has anyone else? Years back, when I bought my acreage intending to own hundreds of old cars, I went through the process of a formal, or hard, zone change. With the proper zoning, you still need a permit of some type to be able to perform your intention. In my case, it is called an "IUP" or industrial use permit. You can only get an IUP if you have proper zoning. I have now gone through this process twice so, am pretty familiar with the procedures. Speedworld has the proper zoning so, it seems from reading that the permits are either not current or not applicable for his use. Speedworld did expand their vendues considerably and normally, these permits are pretty specfic. that is probably the issue. It is my hope that the board of supervisors will allow the use of the facility while they get their act in line but, that is not normal to do so. Why he did not go through the formal permit process is a mystery to me. We'll see. Not sure how many of you here understand the zoning and permit process. It is not the thing most people do. I am as much a fan of Speedworld as anyone and have hosted drags there since 1998. Am hoping everything will work out fine. It does not look like the county has done anything out of line. If there is a zoning or pemit violation, there has to be some sort of action taken whether it is Speedworld or your neighbor having garage sales twice a week for a year. I have not read anything about a permanent closure, just a closer until rules and permits are confirmed to. If that is the case, that is reasonable. If you see otherwise, please explain here specifically.
