I found a 292, and am looking to put it in my 53' Mainline. The Flathead is shot... Can anyone tell me what mods this is going to take. Done it before? I've read a lot of other posts, but some of the links have expired. I've also read there is a Hot Rod article about this same swap, but cannot seem to find it. Any links or info on this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, except suggestions to go with another motor; I have my heart set on this Y-block
If ya wanna talk "Y" block ,visit these folks over at Y Blocks Forever. http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/default.aspx Nice crowd and they do know their shit. Oldmics
I suggest you take measurments for the engine mounts, and tranny. Then if you haven't make sure you swap the 6 volt to 12 volt. Need new radiator, and small stuff, might as well change out the points for electronic, also, put in a newer coil(12V)...Y blocks forever is a great reasource
Yes Mummerts is the Y Block Man. I am getting his conversion kit for the 292 to run a C4 on it. As mentioned some of the small stuff will have to be changed, but its up to you wether you want to change the trans. I would, just to handle the engine better. Mummerts will know the best way to do it.
What I ran into on my 52 Mercury was the oil pan, cross member interference, notched and reinforced the cross member and fabricated side mounts and did away with the 'steadyrest'.I'm using a T-10 four speed so just had to modify the trans cross member and build a trans mount. ROY.
Good thing about a y block on a rainy day you can change points in it from inside car. You need truck oil pan timing cover front engine mounts dropped tie rod.Y not 302v8 better choice.
The truck oil pan still hit on the crossmember,I have three different types of pans,NO WORKY without modifying the crossmember. If you raised the engine enough to clear then the trans hits the tunnel enough that you would need to make the hump larger. ROY.

Mummert may be the Y Block guy, but he is just selling you the conversion kit from Gene at Flat -O- Products. He makes the kit. I found it far easier to order directly from Gene at Flat O, he is easier to get in touch with than Mummert.
I found most everything I need; except, still need to locate a truck timing cover. Thanks for all the great advice everybody! -Johnny
