I need some suggestions on a stall converter for my 55 Chevy 2 door, 327 with flat top pistons,268 comp cam, 64cc 1.92 valve camel hump heads, Holley street Dom. Intake,600cfm edelbrock carb, 700r4 ****** with lockup, 9" ford rear with 3.90 gears. I am wanting to get a summit brand converter they are available in 2000 stall and 2600 stall. The car is basically a street car, cruiser. I might carry it to the track every once and a while, really just want the car to have good street manners. Thanks for the help
I would call the company of whose converter you plan to purchase and give them the same info you posted here. You might get 10 different answers here, but the BEST answer from come from the manufacture.
2000 would be my choice. If it had a bigger cam, you'd want more. But to be sure, look at the cam company's recommendation....they say Basic Operating RPM Range 1,500-5,500
I had my engine builder tell me what I needed to match the 383 he was building, the cam specifications, compression, heads etc. It ended up being 2.5K stall. Next was a transmission (700R) to suit the engine
The other factor is tyre height & you havent given us that yet. 3.90 with the 700R4 will run out pretty close to the same as 3.0 gears with a T350. Throw in the lockup (lowers revs by about 500), and I would suggest that a street car will be happier with the 2000 stall converter. I would think that your revs on the open road cruising will be under 2500 with the700R4
heh...I thought the converter had to match the cam, so the cam guy would know what converter it needs.... I guess there are different ways to get to the same answer. Either way, you'll probably get a recommendation for about 2000 rpm stall speed, to work with that cam.
Or you could call the cam company and get their suggestions with your set up. Comp cams telephone techs are pretty sharp.
First off buy a good "brand name" convertor, 700R4's are a finicky ******. Throw cheap parts at them and they will not last. Contact Hughes Performance (http://www.hughesperformance.com/) and get a lock-up convertor with around a 23-2600 rpm stall speed. It won't be the cheapest convertor out there but it will be a lot cheaper than rebuilding your ****** a second time.
Stock 4.3L S-10 converters (not sure on year or p/n) stall around 2200rpm...I have one in my truck and it's perfect.
