50 years ago I helped my grandfather soak down the new flatbed deck we put on his one ton 48 Chevy with linseed oil and it worked great for that and I still have the truck bed sitting at the house but why the hell would anyone want to put it on a rusty assed car?

    you.

  4. it would say "PAINT ME - PLEASE" :D

Only if you are pronouncing it it wrong ~ how does puh-tee-nuh rhyme with vuh-jahy-nuh ??

Sand off? No it won't, it is deep into the pores of the metal by now.

Yep, just drive around in a piece of crap

Just cuz it attracts a crowd doesn't mane they like it ~ Train wrecks attract a crowd as well :D It's like the old saying "Are they laughing with you, or at you?". I'm not passing judgment on your truck, just saying everything is not always as it seems.

Ooh, that could get good, let him step on his dick.

Yeah, I don't get the whole pretentious ego stroking bling bling thing. You're right. I'll leave that to you gold chainers. Is that primer on the car in your avatar pic? Hypocritical arent you?

    Hahahahaha.... :D
My car (the Jet) was built on the side of my house, and painted in my driveway. I drove it across country a year and half ago (5000 + miles). It has twenty thousand plus on the odometer. But thanks for thinking of me... :)

Yep it was primer,,, you know that stuff you lay down before you put paint on? Work in progess, if left bare metal it would have looked like the truck that started this fiasco and I didnt want that.

Gold Chainer? Hah thats a laugh. I cant even afford gold spray paint for my chains.

Actually, primer goes down before sealer which is what goes on before paint.

So it's down to me to pick my way through dumb threads about dumb shit that is totally off topic.
Well I guess next time I come across something that in my opinion doesn't belong here I'll keep my mouth shut, and just watch the off topic threads pileup one on top of another until this place becomes unrecognisable.
My sincere apologies for trying to keep it real.

  13. Actually Paul I don't know if I have ever been considered a nice guy. Hell my own mom doesn't think I am a nice guy. So I don't suppose that anything that I have said even if everyone agreed would have made me anything but a bad guy.

For me it is catch 22 man, I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. Might as well tell the truth and let anyone who is offended by it be offended.

I don't know that I ever actually bad mouthed the OP truck. He did defend himself in a way only after everyone else tried to defend him. I don't think that anyone needed to defend him he is a grown man after all.

I actually did give him a possible solution to his problem but what will be remembered is that after the rust v refined debate started I was a bad guy. Doesn't really matter I was a bad guy before it all started wasn't I. :D

That issue was from 1951, a '32 for was only 19 years old. that would be a 1993 ford this day in age. Yeah, you wont find too many rusty cars back then. and you think that EVERY hot rod back in 51 had shiny paint. there were guys then, like there are now, that couldnt afford a paint job. but you wouldn't tell them that wasnt a hot rod. yes I can afford a paint job but choose not too. it has more character than a shiny black car.

My bad guys, I don't want to be an asshole. My mouth always gets me in trouble. The bottom line is to each his own, his truck his rules, your cars, your rules. It really doesn't matter who likes gloss and who doesn't, at least we aren't building rice burners, donks and billet rods. Everybody here "gets it" its just their interpretation of it.

I just personally find primered, patina, or flat painted cars more interesting to look at than shiny ones.

I got blasted for making a comment about why you would use modern airbags on a straight axle car. But that's a totally different yelling match.

Yea it would be a temporary solution. Corroseal: mild acid and safe... thanks for the reference.

  18. Dude every post you make proves how much you don't get this site. Yeah guys may not have had the money to put shiney paint on their car but they did not wear it as a badge of honour. If they had the money sure as shit they would have painted it. I am not knocking your choice if you like it that is all that is important but don't come on here and try to tell us that it is what this site is about because it is not.

Let 'em turn green - patiner is big right now. ;)

I myself personally dig a nice weathered survivor, even a well done 'faux' finish (man I feel kinda gay for even knowing what that word means) I also understand the guys who don't - but like my buddy Rick says, "that's why there's 64 colors in the BIG box of crayons..." :D

Rivrat you want history? (NOT from a magazine.) This is what our cars looked like in the 50's when we couldn't afford paint. We considered them a work in progress, but ultimately we all wanted our cars painted and finished, at least where I grew up! The HAMB is all about perserving our history, you either get it or you don't...

Who cares about shiny? I would imagine some of those cars had horrible paint that was done with a brush. (some brush jobs look great by the way) but they weren't rusty.

The point is, this forum is about keeping up and promoting tradition. While rusty may be cool or easy in some minds, it doesn't belong here. Non of my cars are HAMB friendly and I don't try to change the rules so I can show them off. When I do start a traditional build I'll post it.

Until then I want to educate myself and my son on what traditional hotrodding is/was. Rusty linseed oiled trucks aren't it.

  26. yea but the world doesn't look the same when you wear your sphincter for a hat.

I know that was just plain mean. But I did let the first one go. Getting old I guess.

Nothing wrong with agreeing with anyone, it doesn't change the truth. I am going to be honest I have driven some cars that looked pretty poor. I have even driven them to car shows. I parked in the lot so I could go in and see some nice cars, I didn't show them as though it was my pride and joy and a certainly didn't post them on a traditional rod and custom site.

Ya know what a rusty old car is, its a rusty old car. They work real well to get you to and from while you are trying to make ends meet and get your shit together so you can have a nice car. Do they count as a "survivor" well they'll be lucky if they survive the owner and get passed to someone who gives a shit.

Is all that meant to be smart, nope just honest. Did you get your feelings hurt, probably but this is not a support group. Not a thing like AA for car groupies, you are not really supposed to stand up and say, "Hi, my name is Bob and I like rusty old heaps."

Well maybe it was mean, I am an ass after all.

Ya know what I lied, I have posted this car. Wouldn't it be just the coolest if I get it running, oiled it up real good and drove it this way?

Covering up the rust won't stop it from rusting unless you use an inhibitor or encapsulator to prevent it from rusting. Rust is Iron Oxide which is basically an acid that disolves the metal it has bonded with. Like cancer, you have to remove it or starve it to stop it and it feeds on oxygen.

Vary your application technique, just do small areas, rub it in, buff it off and see how it is. Sounds like you just put it on too thick.
Some guys up here use linseed oil as a winter rust preventative, slop it on with a paintbrush good and thick so it essentially self-heals. Given enough time it'll dry up.
Still got the inside of the bed dry? Experiment, rub it on in a spot (say square foot or less, and just enough to change the color, not so its dripping wet) and buff it off (by hand). Try a few different ways, and see how that is in a couple days, and if you like it that way, laquer thinner it off the truck (small sections again) and reapply.

    Alex.

First off, SICK ride bro!! It was a truck very similar to yours that is inspiring me to do a build. (Note I said similar, since it's your choice to not paint it that makes it unique and gives it character, something only 90 years can do, and something a few hours can undo)

Curious, to the haters: If you had a rare valuable antique piece of furniture, assuming normal wear (read - patina), would you strip it and destroy it's value? If you removed the normal oxidation (read - patina) on the Statue of Liberty, would you respect her more because she looked all nice and shiney? If you owned the Mona Lisa, would you get your paint brush out and fill in all of the cracks (read - patina)? Or how about the Declaration of Independence, scotch tape the corners together and white out the aging stain (read - patina)?

It's simply a matter of preference, not taste.

Insert funny joke about filling in Mona Lisa's cracks here______________________
