This is my old 1 car garage which is now gone and being replaced by a two car garage. I wont have any truck updates until I can get it back inside in a couple of months.

Hey, I'm back inside the new shop just in time for fall. Still need to insulate and drywall but this is an automotive website not an episode of This Old House. A couple of photos of what I've been doing. Started fabricating door posts out of 1/8 inch plate and some new hinges out of 3/16 inch plate with DOM tubing welded on for hinge barrels. I've got the roof suspended from the ceiling with rope cuz I don't have any structure to hold it up, doesn't gravity suck?

Ok, I picked up a '64 3/4 ton for $500 for the engine and tranny which I will be pulling out in the next few weeks, the tranny is way too low for cruisin so I picked up a camaro 5 speed. I am waiting on some leaf springs and have a line on an s10 rear end, so thats the skinny on the drive train. Picked up some steel rims from the guy who sold me the tranny, 15x6 up front and 15x8 in the rear. I think they'll look pretty cool. Also I've been trying to figure out the steering. I have all the linkage from the stock pitman arm forward but no steering box. The guy with the tranny, see a pattern here?, has a '60's mustang box, and CPP has a power steering kit for classic chevy trucks which doesn't use a cross steer set up. Any opinions?

Thanks guys, any thoughts on the steering? I need a column, (the easy part), and a box to hook up to my stock linkages. Seems like most after market stuff is all cross steer but all the projects I see on here and in magazines seems to have drag link which looks more traditional.

  12. Red, I have an OG steering box that I bought when I was still trying to decide what to do on mine. What size hole does your pitman arm have?
Have you considered an F-1 box?

Hey Mike thanks for checking in, I know a guy with a 60's mustang box which I think is similar to an old F-1 box, which i did consider after you mentioned that's what you used. The pitman arm is stock but I haven't measured it yet. The other end of the pitman arm has the ball linkage which could be installed into another pitman arm i think. A few different places sell the linkage balls, also I've seen modern style tie rod ends to upgrade the old original linkage balls. This might sound ignant but what is an OG box?

  14. Sorry, I'm from the street (just kidding) OG is original gangster. I meant I have a stock box for a '34 but I'm not sure if it's from a big truck or not. The sector is kinda big. I'll dig it out and post a picture.

Yo, thad be dope bro. I might buy that OG box if it's not gonna cost me a pile of Benjamin's.

I promised myself I would never try to rap so I hope that's the closest I ever come.
I look forward to the picture. Congrats again on your truck Mike, it looks awesome.
My pitman arm measures 7/8", I didn't count the splines cuz I've been drinking and it looks like a lot, like way more than 10, so I will try tomorrow.

  16. Yo, yo word 'em up!
Well, this must be from a big truck.

I was going to use it but could never come up with the right pitman arm.

On the mustang box,and don't quote me on this, but I think it turns the other way so you will be shooting the drag link over arm rather than below. Do you have room for this?

I wonder if a machine shop could take that down and re spline it to fit my pitman arm? Maybe that's not worth the trouble. I'll look into it.
    Thanks

  18. I would spend the money on an F-1 box ( and did actually!) I just barely had to shim mine in the original position to get it to line up with the Chevy column drop. The parts are readily available for rebuild as well...

She's a roller! And I also have the motor and tranny mounted. Hey rusty, here's some shots of the drive train, a small block 350 and a t5 from a camaro with an s10 tailshaft swap thanks to this forum with an s10 rear end. Also my new steering arms from Speedway which were only 39 bucks. I think I will move onto the cab now.
