a friend of mine wants to put a 389 pontiac in his stock 46 ford was there a bell housing ever made for this swap? i don't see any currently made for this,,,
I believe they made one, at least for the early bolt pattern (1955-1960). Trouble is a 389 has so much torque he's going to be changing transmissions or rear gears about every other time he drives it. Would be miles ahead to use a GM trans and put an open drive rearend in it.
Back in the 60's Trans-Dapt made an adapter for Pontiac 61 and up (except 215 Alum) It was part # GD4 Cragar were not making any adapters for Pontiacs at that time.
Like this one? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=674660&highlight=pontiac+adapter And for the front a 59-60 389 with steel cover a Hurst mount would take care of the front to the biscount mounts. I'm actually using a 60 cover on a 66 389 and made my own rear trans side mounts.
59-60 have side mount holes in the same place as all the later ones except the Firebird blocks, the engine side of even a 301 mount will bolt up, so you should be able to use whatever you want up front.
If your friend does do the swap to the ford trans, can you have him post some pics? That would be cool to see. Yes I know, big motor vs. Ford trans and banjo, but these kinds of swaps go so much quicker and you don't have to build an entire new ch***is to do it. Just try to drive sanely, if at all possible
I have 60 389 in 47 with 58 GMC bell and muncie.Just to let you know, not much room for headers or steering.Had to move engine 3/4"to p*** side.
