OK..OK I am staying with the straight axle on the 34 and ditching the IFS on the 35 chevy trucks...ok here is my next FNG question...I want to buy spindles and rotors(disc) for the I-beam and don't know where to start..I looked on Speedway and just found early 40 something chevy spindles...the mechanical brakes are on it now...do I need new spindles..I am sure I do...and what would be the next move in getting this thing set-up in the front end...I was thinking those 36" hairpins but I am open to ideas from you guys..especially on front brakes....got the Caddy discs on the 10 bolt in the back....thanks Joe
I have a 1935 Chevy PU with a 1936 cab. I converted the front to disk using a kit from MP Brakes. I was able to keep the stock spindles: DB1751B 28-40 GM TRUCK DISC BRAKES. BOLT ONTO STOCK SPINDLES 11" 5 - 4 3/4" $395.00 http://www.mpbrakes.com/mpearlygmtrk.htm I've been looking for somewhere to find a dropped axle for my truck, know of any? I did find a guy that will drop my stocker at http://www.roadsters.com/axles/ Good luck
your best bet is to use '49 - '54 passenger car spindles & brakes. to adapt them to your axle, you'll have to open up the kingpin boss to match the later kingpin. if you want to keep your 6-lug pattern, you can use a similar year truck drum on the passenger car backing plate. i have some really good articles and books at home. i'll scan in the applicable article and post it here, but i wont be able to do it until sunday night at the earliest. the article i have in mind contains all the dimensions and a list of parts. hope this helps, ed ps- rustynewyorker on this board is parting out a '52(?) chevy that has all the parts you need.
might be able to use the original 34 spindles with the later drum brakes, such as pickup brakes from 53-59, with the 51-54 car 5 lug hubs/drums. at least that's what I'd do....
slix...I think that will be the way to go...did you need to run the brake booster as was shown on that link...my truck should be pretty light without alot of the body pieces...fenders and runing boards...just curious...I know discs are the way I was gonna go..with discs already in the back...and fronts handling most of the braking...joe
I have not figured out the master cyl yet...too many projects. You're probably right about the booster. I have to decide if I'm going to run a manual trans (probably with a hydraulic throwout bearing) or an auto before I setup the brake master. I'm leaning toward the manual. Sounds like there are a lot of options. SpeedwayMotors.com also has dropped axles that use the later spindles mentioned, etc...
I am running a Chevy 305 and probably a Powerglide...then I won't have to mess with clutch and all...my project is in the early stages but hope to make some ground on it before it gets too cold...joe
slix... I just found this post and I thank u for your info on the 30's chevy disc brake kit that uses stock spindels. U saved me alot of money and time THANKS cause i really wanted to have disc but didnt want to have to buy new spindels and such so.. thanks a bunch Alex
granted this is an old thread, but will 57 chev sedan front brake and hub asembly be made to fit a 34 chev coupe axle, as i have the 34 axle but it has 6 bolt stud pattern and a friend has offered me a set of 57 brakes.
I run the same MP kit as listed on my '37, it works very good and was a easy bolt on. I am running with manual brake, dual master cylinder. Peddle is a little stiff, but stops just fine a little effort. Power boost would be nice, but not really needed. My truck weighs 3300 with two people. Rear axle is from a '79 TA with drum brakes. Joe
57 won't. The 51-54 car hub and drum is 5 lug and will fit on the early spindles. Bearing sizes are different, spindle is shorter, etc starting in 55 on cars. Trucks kept the older sizes thru 59. So you can put the 51-54 car hub/drum on 51-59 trucks. And if you use the 51-59 truck backing plate and 51-54 car hub/drum, you can put "modern" 5 lug drums on the 30s cars. You will need to do work to get the backing plate to fit, as far as spacers, bolt sizes, etc. Another trick is to use the 1940s truck axle and spindles, and the 50s brakes.
yeah im not keen on running the 6 bolt pattern, theyll be donated to a restorer. im tryn for a 5 bolt pattern if i can. cool thanks i'll keep an eye out for some 51-59 truck backing plates etc etc.
