I run a 49-54 Chev pitman arm on a hQ box, as (along with early Ford) the splines are the same. So if the Vega is the same as early Ford - it will fit.

I will let you know on the input shaft tomorrow.

I have a spare if you need it.

I don't think the power holden box is much smaller thatn the mercedes?
thing is they weigh a ton. I am not in favor of the rack thing, I reckon the holden is the way to go, is it commonly used rhd down under?

don't laugh at my frame horns, I did them nice, but it the wrong spot, so did them again quick in the rain.

    while we are at it...
Is there per chance a aussie street rod ford header that sits closer to the block right side, like they do left side? I think I am going to have to grind alll the welds from inside the flange and lean them in a tad.

    worth noting here:
These amazingly high quality awesome bolt on, rather than blind bolt into forged steering arms from so-cal ARE available in right hand drive, if you e-mail them direct, they say they aren't.:D

so IS there some kind of correlation between the aftermarket pitmann arm lengths, and the steering arms?
    pantographical leverage, something or other?

or is it as simple as its all determined by the spindle nut stop?

Don't know if HQ is same as vega but I can answer a couple of your questions

Pitman arm on HQ is tapered both at the ball joint and the where it attaches to the steering box. Also the splines are not symetrical so it will only go on in 1 position.

After market pitman arms are normally 1 " shorter than stock HQ. That means that your turning circle will be reduced. I had stock pitman arm went to shorter stainless arm but swapped back to stock due to the reduced turning circle.

The sterring arms will all be the same lenght - if you use the short pitman arm then you just mount the box closer to the cross steer link.

You can buy brand new repro box for around $350 in Oz

Just checked input spline for HQ is 3/4 inch 36 spline.

If you are thinking of buying new google armadale auto parts they are open 7 days a week. Owner is a rodder and a member on here.

Reason I say consider new is they are an old box now - seal kit alone is about $60 - $70 and that does not include new recipricating balls or the block they run through. Hardening on the shaft was marginal at best so many of them are badly worn.

rhd, with the helical groove going the correct way, will fit to an early ford like a vega, puts the steering shaft close to the ch***is rail, excepts a vega splined pitman arm, and a 5/8ths vega to 3/4 dd borgeson joint

it 'looks' as it even uses the holden rhd idler shaft, AND input shaft length.
maybe they are the same thing.
'looks' like the standard saginaw 525 mounting layout too.
plus it might benifit from having up-dated internals.
plus in a high boy rhd, you won't see it too much.

/\ thats why the shaft sticks out that much, so you can swap it manual/power - -so a rhd non paowr cj jeep steering box.......
    erm
so the holden casting and giblets must be from a cj rhd postal jeep. a moper part but saginaw
