i have a chance to by this hemi that was in a barn for many years, the seler has no clue of the year or make, can any one tell by the picture and what it could be out of, thanks
Looks like a dodge to me as well. Can't see any mounting ears in your photo. Can you see the # on the top of the block in front of the valley cover?
the front stamp pad is right on top in front of the intake manifold, that stamping will tell you what year, what its fromt and size..looks like maybe 331,354 based on the lack of an extended bellhousing..
i only have the pictures for now, no numbers, want to figure if it is a chrysler , i am 4 hours away.
Looks like a 315 Dodge hemi, compare to this photo http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4909415&postcount=6 similar water pump, same large engine mount "Tab" underneath.
reall w/o the numbers it's tough, unless you tear it down..see if the seller will give you the stamp pad numbers, they're right there it'll save you 4 hrs
he says someone told him a dodge fargo dump truck, i am looking for parts for spare for 354 ind, can we tell by the covers?
It is a 241 Dodge. Nothing the same as a 331 Chrysler. The ID is from the front dipstick, no ears, and no bumps on the covers.
Earlier than '56 Dodge truck, likely a 241, maybe a 270. It has the truck "raised water pump", looks like remnants of a governor at the carb base, no side motor mounts. Only the 241 and Pre '56 Dodge fit that profile. Not worth much by model or condition, IMO. Ray
Maybe Im crazy but I dont care what it is...if the asking price is low enough I'd just buy it.... If it has plug wires coming out of the valve covers and the prce is right...buy it! Does anyone else remember when 331 and 354's could be had for less than 500 bucks? I'd build a car around that pile of "worthless" hemi...
Looks like a low block Dodge like some others have said. The carburetor looks just like the one that is on my '56 331 out of a dump truck, so I'd say the truck ID is right on.
didn't by yet, if i can't use it for parts i don't want it, if it was closer i would pick up no questions asked and figure out later. it is the time i am missing(long weekend family time) if i am going to take a full day to pick up it is going to cost big time with the wife. i can see the difference between it and my 354, but i don't kno much about the baby hemi's, never seen one around here, and by the pictures i can't tell the diference in sizes, mostly wanted to kno if the heads, rocker arms ***embly maybe block are the same
Nothings the same! They are great little engines but it takes some skill to get much power out of them. they are more expensive to build than a Chrysler.
Nothing interchanges between Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler hemis....three distinctly different sized engines...with all hemi engines there are low decks and high decks....the engine in question appears to be a Dodge truck version...not all Dodge truck blocks had the engine mount tabs at the front sides of the block....some used a single front motor mount directly under the water pump at the top of the timing chain cover...these were the early hemis....Chrysler and DeSoto hemis had thermostats in the intake manifolds...Dodges used a bolt on thermostat housing....All hemis had forged steel cranks and rods....Performance parts are available for all three sizes of hemis....I'd say to you to go ahead and grab it....even if you don't use it, you can clean it up and sell it....These little hemis look way too cool in a fenderless/hoodless roadster or Tbucket...I have a 270 Red Ram Hemi in my 1952 Ford F1 pickup w/tripower and headers...runs real strong !!!.....it doesn't know that it is less than 300 cu. in.....it really stuffs the engine bay.
i'ld have to agree..looks like a baby dodge...looks nothing like my 325 dodge....seen here in bone stock trim..i'ld still have to know if it rolls over or is stuck....they are good motors for running and or wheelin and dealin......
I would beg to Differ .... Every thing i got from them except for a chrome dip Stick has ended up in the Trash. Research is your Best Friend !!!!
he has sent me this number D551-121325, the motor won't turn over, since i have to travel 8 hours round trip he is willing to sell it to me for 75$ i think it is a red ram 270 1955 from the little of info i can find.
Here are a couple places to help you http://www.hothemiheads.com/hemi_info/hemi_engine_id.html http://www.thehemi.com/engines.php
