Hello all I have 54 chevy 210 235 3 speed I have had starter issues since I got the car. I thought I had a bad spot on the flywheel so I kept drivin while searchin for a flywheel. I finally got a flywheel from a truck and put the car on the lift and pulled the dust pan. I turned the flywheel and checked it out looks like the starter is to far away from the flywheel. When lookin at the teeth it looks like the starter was just skimmin the top of the teeth. I know the previous owner had replaced the starter and there are differences in some of them but in my searches I have not found any info to point me in the right direction as far as changing to a certain drive or starter to work with a certain flywheel and what this one would act like on that one. Maybe some one out there is pickin up what I am puttin down and can shed some light. Thanks in advance Scott

Chevy used two different starter/flywheel combinations. Thru 54 they had 6v starters and co**** teeth flywheels, starting in 55 they went to 12v starters and fine teeth flywheels. I wonder if someone put the wrong starter in it?

Also, it's kind of confusing from your description, do you mean the starter gear is not sliding in all the way, or do you mean it is not meshing fully because the centerlines of the two gears are too far apart?

It doesnt apear to be meshing cause of centerline.

Did you take the starter off, and see if the teeth on the starter and on the flywheel look like they are the same size? The 12v style teeth are smaller than the 6v style teeth

Do you know how many teeth will be on a 12v starter and if I can put a 6v drive in one? Thanks a lot Scott

You need either a 6v starter or a 12v starter depending on what flywheel you have. The internal parts do not interchange, everything is different, you need the complete starter.
