  3. Now here's a dumb ass thread if I ever saw one!

    Burnouts are for burnouts!!!

    Next ON-TOPIC thread please..........................................

  4. I host 5 to 6 shows a year, 3 of them include drag racing. One of them, held in a small town, has a burn out contest. the police, fire dept and mayor are fine with it and we do it right on the city street. The fire truck puts water down and I usually have one of the on duty cops be one of the judges.
It's gone on for 4 years and has been the high light of the event. Hundreds of people watch and enjoy it. People outside the car hobby and without a high performance car esp really enjoy seeing this.
We do some damage to the street but, so far, there has not been any issues with the city.
I thought of some sort of plate to put down but, how would you secure it?

If a steel plate got ejected from the cars traction, it could kill someone.
So, be careful. This has to be done in a sane way or people will get hurt.

  5. Thanks for the positive answers from those who cared enough to respond. The rest of you? Your welcome.

I will stick with the question. I can't think of anything but a full sheet of steel that could be put in place, stand up to the abuse, and then removed. It better be fairly thick and bigger than the car wheelbase.

The main thing is to figure out how to hold down your steel plate so it has no chance of flying out from under the tires of a car that might hook up on it.

We've got a town full of rednecks about 50 miles from my house that has an annual burn out contest in the middle of main street that draws big crowds out of the surrounding hills. The local casino puts them on with their car show and uses a steel plate that I think is backed up by a couple of steel posts in the ground. I've only been to that once and it's two miles from the house. You had better make a trophy for those Alberta farm boys in their diesel pickups though as they will be hot to enter.

I don't think there is really any to do this practically unless the burnouts are static [stationary].In Australia the summernats bunout masters competition is held on a pad with a lead in section.GOOGLE THAT comp up for some wild burnout action .

I may or may not have done a burnout on my full deck car trailer, (no not the brightest idea but it happen) But I would double or triple up the steel plating for a competition make front wheel chocks and snugly strap the car down Front wheel basket type would prob be the safest and crisscross the rear to keep the car straight. Burnouts are fun If you don't like them like anything else don't do'em and don't watch.

uh, you can turn off the traction control. It'll burn the tires off on wet pavement, and sometimes a little squeak on dry stuff, but that's about it.

Point being, not all cars can light 'em up proper, that's why crowds consistantly love a burnout contest. Even the people that think it's dumb, it's like a train wreck, you can't not watch it.

even when i was younger i never liked burn out contests, i never liked the taste, smell, waste of tires or needless air polluting, if you want to get 14 year olds and up interested in vintage cars invite the hooter girls or some models for a photo shoot and give them the chance to get behind the wheel for the photos during intermission. They will love it.

I think the steel plates anchored to posts are a good idea. Hell the posts could add another layer of protection in case the brakes gave out and the car tried to launch into the crowd (doubtful, but you never know).

    ...scratching my head here...

Dude you just described how people have successfully argued to get racetracks shut down!

  24. I am sorry but I have to say also that the burnout comp does nothing for me either. I saw my first and last in 1983 . A model A tourer smoking the tyres bigtime on a dedicated paved area just for the event. The car became totally enveloped in smoke . Could only hear the engine revving. This continued on for some time in much the same manner as paint dries. Then still not being able to see anything but smoke there was an audible bang. The engine idled down and the smoke clears. The Model A is now visible. It is now sporting a blown rear tyre and a missing right rear mudguard. Sorry but it was totally inane.

For me where the burnout preceeds a 1/4 mile pass or a hard lauch for a go-whoa event then bring it on.

Burnouts are fun in SOMEONE ELSE'S CAR. I don't see the logic in fucking up a perfectly good car just to make smoke but it's kinda fun to watch somebody else do it I guess.

burnouts is a mindless activity which requires no skill = just a waste of time and money, sorry but its the truth, Racing offers true entertainment value and requires a crap load of skill which is respected by the audience and the fumes and tire smoke are nill to the crowd, I see your perception about my comments being anti track but my comment are directed to the average joe burning tires, wasting money and the real possibility of a warped flywheel, burnt out clutch or destroying a quarter panel for a purposeless activity which provides little entertainment/no skill and most of the spectators end up walking away thinking the drivers are idiots. Also the comment was directed to the crowed that gets caught up in the smoke cloud and nearly pucks their guts out trying to breath. Please dont compare track racing to burnouts just wanted to make my point of view clear. Like I mentioned before to the OP with his intentions of getting young people into cars either get models for a photo shoot which they can participate in by getting a photo op behind the wheel or another suggestion which I think would be super cool is trailer in a project vehicle and let the kids watch the car being wrenched on and allow them to get up close and help out or ask questions

  28. big difference between traction control and torque management. Your hemi probably pulls harder at 58% throttle than 60% thru 100%. I think that's where its at on those ??

I'm not sure if they have been able to unlock the mopar computers yet so that you can tune some of the torque management out.

    my 0.50c.

Any portable surface, is inherently dangerous. if it can be moved, unless it is bigger than the car itself, the car doing the burnout can hook it up and launch it, with predictable catastophic results.

As for the debate of burnout comps, never saw the raw of them except for the redneck/bogan crowd.

If you want to draw a crown, the idea of the models will get in the guys, but may turn off their wife's

Try going another direction, If you have an open space, try a form of motorkahna.
