pictured is the wire harness that is in my 39 ford.. you can see that it has two relays, one is wired for the horn, the other i'm not sure what it's for, it has a 10 gauge orange wire maked "relay A" and a pink wire marked "relay ignition power" and both these wires run to an open end and i don't know where they go.. i'm gonna run an electric fan.. the kit has a black w/red stripe wire coming from the fuse panel (30 amp) that says "fan power".. i know i need a relay for the fan and was wondering if the relay with the orange and pink wires is for the fan?? or headlights??.. i sure hope someone can straighten me out on this and maybe even tell me how to wire the fan relay..
The fan relay I have, works by grounding one contact to make an electrical connection between two others.
Don't know who made the harness, but every harness I ever purchased had an indepth wiring description and routing chart or schematic. For me, I've found that its really important to read the entire pamplet and highlight portions that are appropriate for your particular car. For me, the least desirable harness and instructions came from Painless.
I onder a fan the other day and a wire harness. I didn,t get it yet from Speedway. The way it works is power wire from fuse to relay, contact point on relay to fan.2nd wire on fan to grd. Ign on to power wire on relay smaller wire, the last is to temp sender, or switch manual. Give it the smoke test.
Surely it came with a schematic and some type of directions. If not I would get on the horn to the manufacturer before I did anything.
Even if it didn't have paperwork- the brand name is on there somewhere & you could download the PDF instructions.
You are 100% right about the Painless instructions. We wired my Sons T bucket with a Summit kit he bought, and I am pretty sure Painless made it as the box and all look a lot like theirs. We had a hell of a hard time trying to figure out what they were saying, and we are not strangers to wiring cars. We finally just went with what we thought we were supposed to do and it luckily worked. Don
the papers that came with all the parts for the car says that it is a RPC (racing power company) wire harness R1002.. the instructions don't give a chart, but there was charts from "ez2wire" and one from "it's a snap" but not even those show how to hook to a relay.. the horn relay seems to split and makes the second relay hot, but the orange and pink wires still need to go somewhere
It's probably a relay for the fan. I would look at the base of the relay, and see what wires connects to the switch contacts, and which wires connect to the relay coil. You'll probably find that the orange wire is connected to a contact, and is supposed to go to the fan, and the pink wire is connected to the coil, and is what makes the relay turn on. But that's just a wild *** guess, you need to do the research yourself, since I can't get my hands on it for you.
Most wire harness now days have the circuit discription every few inches on the wire check the wire coming out of terminal "87" on the relay and see what circuit discription says. That will tell you the function of each relay.
I know its an old thread but did you ever get it figured out? I'm fighting the same harness as we speak.
Most harness fuse blocks come with a horn relay built in. Some have a electric fan relay but the kit should specify that. Most electric fan kits have the Bosch style 30 amp relay in them. I wouldn't wire one up any other way. The harness may have a dedicated FAN wire which is an ignition 12v hot wire. This most likely connects to terminal 86 on the relay.
