I don't blame you. i've had daily drivers with flatheads, not pleasant. Always a pain in the *** when you're late, then you have to work on it. The SBC will keep it pretty trouble free. But what do I know? I'm one of those idiots that thinks cars are made to be driven.

Nice buy. When I read the ***le I openened the thread to see how much sheetmetal was gone or needed replaced as I still have a front clip and cab to bring home and that stuff is going to need to find a home other than mine as the city is on my **** for too much stuff in the backyard. Looks like a nice solid project to me. Rod

The "just threw up" comments are so unnecessary.
The HAMB is filling up with lame comments like that, everyone is an expert and instead of being nice to a fellow car guy they make this lame comments.

Nice project, getting a old car thats been sitting for a long time on the road is great.
For 300bucks in Sweden i would get aboute a front fender or something like that ha ha.

Right on...good to see your making progress! You'll be roasting the tires in no time(and pretty well with that SBC)! ;)

  6. I've had many different engines in my F1 over the years...first was a 390FE w/4speed, next was a Flathead w/dual carbs and 4speed, now it has a 55 Dodge Red Ram Hemi w/tripower and all synchro three speed....this one is the best so far....do yourself a great big favor before you get back on the road....convert to front disc brakes !!!...the stock drums **** !!!

Those that are complaining about your budget and engine choice....I am sure they will all chip in and have your flathead rebuilt for you if you ask them okay.....you know....about 3-4 thousand dollars.

I have got to throw in my trwo cents. While an SBC is a cookie cutter, no imagination engine in most cases, I understand your situation. You have the engine, you are trying to get on the road without sellling a kidney. So, go ahead,. pop that small block in there. But, I wouldn't open the hood too much and I certainly wouldn't brag about it. (smiling) No matter what, you'll have a reliable and damn good performing pickup. But, save that flathead. You might just want to use it later on, if not in this pickup, maybe something else. Besides, it's a great engine to tear down, do an autopsy and see what happened to it. Maybe even slowly rebuild/repair.
Keep us updated on F1 progress...words and photos. Best wishes with it!!

Good on ya.. get it on the road safe and reliably in whatever maner your budget allows. I loved my flattie, but I gotta saya 350 is a safe and reliable choice. no issues getting filters at the quickie lube for sure lol!

Go Man Go! Those are the best trucks in the World. Your choice of a SBC is a good one. It'll make the truck run for a very loooong time and have plenty of drive it everyday reliability. Besides you don't have to open the hood. Flatheads are great, but if you are going to use the truck your choice is right on the money. Take the Five speed out of the S-10 and you'll be even farther ahead.

    Keep posting up-dates,

    Tim

I no longer own this one but yours makes me want to start all over again! We went all kinds of places and all kinds of miles with a SBC,5-speed, and a 9". It's still going strong many states away.

Outfrickinstanding! You're making great progress with a sound plan. You've managed to locate some great deals so far and don't have a ton of cash wrapped up in the truck. Thats hotrodding.

  20. Dontcha just love it when people try and build YOU'RE car/truck for you?

Anyways looks like it's going good so far. Keep up the great progress!!!

I am so impressed by the extreme coolness of the SBC haters.

  22. Awesome truck! I'm from CT too. If my flathead didn't run so great in my truck when I got it I probably would have tossed it out for a 302 or something. Save it for later, they are a very cool motor.

Nice score. I love the comments like dont open the hood, or dont brag about it.
You should take a pic of it and make it your main pic.
After spending money on a "running flat head" and finding out it is cracked, I decided on a SBC 283 and I will not have any problem opening that hood.

What I dont understand, is these haters chime in and add extra post and negativity to someones build. Instead of chiming in with a lame post, why not chime in with your cash.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing all your progress.

Great deal! If I had a dollar for every time I had to p*** up a ridiculously cheap find because I didn't have the room or extra scratch......well I'd have 3 dollars so I guess that's not the point. Don't listen to the armchair quarterbacks, just get it on the road.
