I'm interested in the art of pin striping and was wondering what tools I need to get started. I'm wanting to practice on old tool boxes (or whatever I can find) and then eventually to my 64 galaxie. any suggestions out there?
use the search function. there are tons of info on that subject. eastwood has lots of supplies. good luck! post pix!
Get a brush that is comfortable to hold in your hand first off, everyone told me to start with a Mack but with my short fingers couldn't get the swing of it, when I finally got an Excalibur that I liked the feel of I was almost instantly learning much easier! I have been steering a brush for many years now and a Mack also comes as second nature now,but not without its own learning curves, try to find some stripers in your area to hang out with so you can get a hands on lesson or two ,watch as many pinstriping videos as you can on Youtube and certainly create a login with the Pinhead Lounge as it is the most inspiring site on the web for this type of art,do not get discouraged it will be hard but eventually becomes a bunch easier, the other really good thing is to find and attend a panel jam or two, everyone is willing to p*** the secrets in this trade, they're all ally good folks! The best friends I've ever had have been stripers and artists, very giving and very talented group! Most of all enjoy, and save pictures of even your early works,it's pretty great to see your own progress down the road! Chris...
I always tell pinstriper newbies to grab a piece of gl***... stripe on it and use a razor blade to clean it off until you get comfortable with striping something and leaving it on there.
The motorbooks workshop "how to pinstripe" book really helped me out. I got a beginners pin striping kit off Amazon and have been having fun with it ever since.
quit drinking quit smoking quit coffee quit soda quit donuts(sugar) Then if your hands stop shaking you might have a shot!
depending on what kind of pistriping u wanna do dagger styles get a xcalibur. scrolling get virus or swirly q or a kafka. a brush box paint i would use 1 shot, with 1 shot med reducer you are gonna need some equipment cleaner to get the paint outa the brush when done and you will need some mr j's brush oil to keep your brush from goin bad. next pick up a sign blank and one of the many how to pinstripe books or one of wizards pinstriping dvd. all the supplies you can find at coastairbrush.com thats pretty much what u need besides patience and dedication. good luck and keep us posted, any questions hit me up
Thanks guys for the replies. I'm excited to get started but like chaddilac suggested, I'll start on gl*** first. I'll post up some art when I have chance to receive some feedback.
