1937 Buick. Cubans are very resourceful in keeping these old cars alive, and this one has been "customized" a little with the top and headlight brows. Don Here is a stocker for comparison.
I've got a 37 Buick Special in the shed, awaiting the transplant of a newer 263 CI Straight 8. 37 and 38 Buicks are some of the best looking GM cars ever built. I wonder if the old Str8 is still in the Havana car, or if it's had a transplant. Wish I had those sidemount front fenders......
Note the deep '50s Buick steel wheels...I used these on my '50 Oldses, and on every Olds rear under my early Fords...(pre-9" days!) The Buick 'poverty caps' made them look even deeper.
The Cubans are amazingly cleaver people. Not only do they keep 80 year old American cars alive with no replacement parts available, but they will strap a bunch of 55 gallon drums on one and make the 90 mile trip from Cuba to our shores ! Don 59 Buick 46 Mercury
Dig the headlight brows and Carson top! I'm thinking if we claimed the finish to be a very involved faux patina process that we could have an AMBR contender!
nice cuban custom lol, i bet theres plenty of cars just waiting to be sculpted in someones garage somewhere..
I read somewhere that the Cuban govt. considers all of those Yank Tanks to be national treasures and that it's illegal to sell them out of the country. There's a pretty neat little flick called "Yank Tanks" on Netflix. It's well worth watching if you get the chance.
@Koz - Yup, they WERE real, until they were intercepted by the US Coast Guard. They removed the refugees from the vehicles...then sunk them.
