What do i need to do/buy to install a 5 speed to an 8ba in a 1936 coupe ute with original bench seat, is there a publication on this conversion cheers
You'll also need the Cast Iron bellhousing and starter plate to make up the difference between the mounting flange location between the 8BA and a 59AB. Then you'll need a Supra or Celica 5 speed which won't come cheap and are getting harder to find now. Also make sure you clock the runout on the whole ***embly before you finally bolt it up tight as I know of 3 people who have had trouble with the alignment of Mike's bellhousings.
Here is some info from oz rats build that may be of interest. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=389127 You may have to put a notch in your sear for the shifter?
I do a shifter reverse conversion on the Supra boxes, moves the shifter forward about eight inches. PM me if you need more info.
Over here on the U S of A we use the Twww.tremec.com/performance/tko.html5 from a Chevy S10 truck. You Aussies don't have that box but if you want to spend a few bux the Tremec TKO is a great 5 speed with aa choice of four different shifter positions and various ratios according to model. This from their website.... www.tremec.com/performance/tko.html Ridding the world of outdated 4-speeds and overworked factory 5-speeds, the TREMEC TKO is the most popular and versatile performance 5-speed manual available anywhere in the aftermarket. Begging the question, "Why 'crush rocks' when you could move mountains?", the TKO is an extremely durable unit, perfect for retrofits in early muscle cars and street rods in addition to its originally intended purpose as a significant strength upgrade for late-model street machines. Handling up to 600 lb-ft. of torque, the TKO offers strength without compromise; combining awesome power-handling abilities with crisp, positive shift characteristics. Multiple shifter locations allow for adaptation to a wide range of vehicles. Add to that a deep overdrive for big savings at the pump, and it's easy to see how the TKO has become a legend in its own time!
OK, must be two different versions of the gearbox one with shifter tower forward and one further back ?
Just add it to the post using the "manage attachments" under the go advanced reply tab. Let us Ute fans see some pics.
